Lazy students<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: “As a new teacher, I am frustrated with unmotivated, lazy students in my class. I do not know how to make them learn. Do you have any advice?”<\/p>\n

Answer: If you have unmotivated students in class, you can encourage them by praising them when they participate in class activities. For example, by saying “Very good” or “Good job,” you allow these students to feel that they can accomplish something and they are more likely to become motivated. A good teacher always makes these students feel confident that they can succeed by their efforts. I think some students feel unmotivated because they lack confidence, so they need to rebuild their confidence by receiving some encouragement from teachers.<\/p>\n
Another way to motivate them is get them involved in class activities by making assignments more interesting and engaging. You may need to modify your lecture by asking more questions to allow these students to participate in a class discussion where they could easily answer the questions and receive praises from you. You make them feel that they have choices in their education by allow them to do projects based on their interests, even if these projects are not a part of the class. For example, I ask some unmotivated students to find three technology news from newspapers and present them to the class. That will give them something to do and let them have a chance to express themselves in front of the class so they feel that they can contribute.<\/p>\n
On other occasions, I would encourage them to work as a team on a small project to give them a chance to feel that they can accomplish something. I would make sure what they did also relate to their real lives as well. When they feel that their learning affect them personally, they will pay more attention. For example,\u00a0 by let them choose certain topics from newspapers and analyze them, they can learn more about real life lessons. I also ask them to review employment trends, the number of unemployment among graduates, the shortage of skills in the industry, as this information do influence their motivation.<\/p>\n
If these students are still lazy and refuse to do anything, then you need to communicate acceptable standards for participation in class to make sure that they understand these requirements and know how they are expected to meet them. To enforce the rules, you need to be consistent. Sometimes, I would involve them in a class discussion by asking questions and give proper time for them to answer the questions. AS I am waiting silently for their answer, they will feel uncomfortable and be prompted to respond. If a student knows that he will be called and asked questions, he will do the work. However, if you know that a lazy student is unprepared, do NOT\u00a0 question him as it will cause embarrassment on his part.<\/p>\n
If a student shows inappropriate behavior, you should meet that student after class to discuss the behavior. Never confront the student in front of other students in class. In severe cases of unacceptable behavior, you can remove students from class.<\/p>\n
