Getting students to read<\/p>\n
A professor complaint: “My students do not like to read. They prefer Internet surfing, text messages, Facebook, and video games. When I was young, I read all types of books, from history books to scientific books, from romantic novels to science fiction. But today students are not like what they were in the past; I do not know how to make them read.”<\/p>\n
I told him: “Of course, these electronic things distract them, but if you want your students to read, make it difficult for them NOT to read. If you ask them to read a 200 pages technical book, they will never complete it. It is important to assign the appropriate material to get them to read. For first-year students, I often begin with technology news to get them excited about what happen in the industry. I always try to find material that is appropriate for what students need to know. I start with something easy, clear and short for them to develop the reading habit. Since I wrote a blog, I let them read my blog and other people’s blogs or short articles similar to what they often see on Facebook and popular websites. But I ask them to answer a few questions that I posted in the reading materials. Most of the questions are about the “Why” and “How” to make them think when reading. Having a written answer to my questions help me to know whether they read the assigned materials or not. The answer does not have to be long, just about one or two pages for each reading assignment. Some answers can be used as topics for class discussion as I ask them to read their answer to the class and let others comment on them. By listen to their discussion,\u00a0 I know whether they understand the material or not and what I need to do in class.<\/p>\n
He disagreed: “You are teaching a computer class, which is small but I teach a much larger class, over 120 students and it is impossible to do it for a large class.”<\/p>\n
I explained: “If you cannot read 120 homework then just read a smaller sample, may be twenty to thirty to evaluate students’ understanding. By skimming through randomly, you can still find some not very good written papers and raise the issue in class. It will send the message that you expect the assignments to be completed and done well. Every week, I give a short quiz based on reading materials to make sure that they read the materials. For second or third-year students, I ask them to give a presentation on the reading materials to get them develop presentation skills.
