For most of them, it is first-time they live away from the family, many are excited with high hope about their future, and a little bit of worrying. The same feeling also happens for many parents as they are worried, excited, but also hope that their children will be able to get a good education, get a good job, and build a better future.

However, it is important for students and parents to know that go to college in the U.S. is different from going to college in their country. Besides the cultural and language differences, students have to adjust quickly to different teaching method and learning responsibility. Most U.S. university courses require a lot of readings and note takings which are major obstacles to international students. Without a good reading skill, they will be overwhelmed by the materials and may not be able to catch up with the class. For example, the textbook that I use in “Introduction to computer systems” has twenty-six chapters, each chapter is about forty to sixty pages that students must read within a semester or about one hundred pages per week. There are extra news readings about market and technology trends per week that they must also read BEFORE class so students can participate in class discussion. Most professors’ lecture is only a summary of the key concept in the textbook. If students do not complete the textbook and extra reading, they may not be able to follow the lecture or contribute to the discussion.

Most U.S. universities allow students make the decisions on their fields of study, what courses to take, and what activities to get involved, etc. But they expect students to take responsibility for their education as well as the consequences of their actions. But many international students are not familiar with these instructions as they often depend on someone such as parents or teachers to make the decision for them. Many often asking friends or other students to help regarding which courses to take without reading the program’s requirements. There are courses that do not count toward the credits needed to graduate. When they take these courses, they may have to spend more time in school than necessary.

I often advise students: “College is not a market where you can select whatever you like to study. You should carefully plan your study by reading all instructions carefully to decide which are the required courses that you must take to fulfill the requirements. You must carefully select all electives courses that are related to your fields of study to build a strong foundation and focus on the career that you want to build.” Last year, I read an interesting article that found, on the average, it took five to six years for many international students to get a four-year Bachelor’s degree. The author found not because of the language issue, but the poor reading skills, which many have to repeat the same class; and the tendency to take whatever course they like, rather than focusing on what they need to study.”

Some international students prefer to stay and find a job in the U.S. after graduation. In that case, they need to carefully investigate the job market to identify the high demand areas BEFORE making the select the field of study. They also need to understand all the immigration rules such as Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricula Practical Training (CPT), and H1B Visa to make sure that their education investment will bring the right result.

I often advise students: “To go to college is only the beginning. To get a degree is like having a key that opens the door of opportunity, but to enter you need to have knowledge and skills. Do not think a degree alone will help you to get a job. Even getting a job is no guarantee that you can keep it for a long time. Today the job market is an uncertain place with a lot of ups and downs. To make a good living, you need to have both knowledge and skills in the right field that has high demand to help you to get, keep, and grow in your career.”

As more international students come to study in the U.S., there is a high number of cheating where some students chase after the degree instead of studying. Some cheat on exams, copy other works or asked someone to help to take the exams for them. There was a report that DartmouthCollege suspended 64 students of cheating. Harvard also is investigating hundreds of students accused of improper collaboration on final exams. The Wall Street Journal reported that international students, in particular, those from China, are more than five times as likely to cheat, compared to other students. The Journal reporters analyzed data from a several U.S. universities and found 5.1 cases of cheating for every 100 international students. That’s more than five times the cheating rate found for U.S. students. Many students admitted that all they want is the degree.

Last year, a student told me: “If I cannot get a job here, I can still use the degree to get a job in my country. The U.S. degree has high value in my country.” I told him: “The piece of paper you receive at the end of your college education will do nothing to help you to be a productive person in your society. You do not go to university just to get a job, but to be an educated person, someone who can be useful to your people and your society. How people in your country will look at you is what you can do after you graduate from a university. You may have a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or even a Ph.D. degree on your resume, but what else do you have that will impress others? What other skills do you have that will contribute to the company or your society? The degree is only evidence for the experiences you have, the skills and knowledge you learn, and the accomplishments you achieve while you are here to get educated. If you want to come out of school as an educated person, focus on study instead of wasting your family’s money on drinking, partying then cheating on exams.”

Mỗi năm, hàng trăm nghìn sinh viên châu Á vào các đại học Mĩ.
