STEM in high schools<\/p>\n

For many years the U.S. government has been talking about STEM careers but somehow there was only small increase in the number of college students who pursue science, technology, engineering, or math career. Last week I met Rod Ellison, a math teacher when he took a number of high school students to visit CMU to encourage them to study STEM.<\/p>\n

He explained \u201cGovernment spent a lot of money to encourage students to study STEM careers but somehow it was not effective because few people realized that it should begin with the teachers not the students. It is the teachers who are passionate about STEM careers can influence students to study STEM. What we need are more teachers to study STEM. We cannot excite students without the right kind of STEM talents in the classroom. If you have History teacher to teach Math, how much enthusiastic can you get in the classroom? Do you think a Literature teacher would love to teach science? How many teachers are well trained in STEM fields? Today many high schools teachers are struggling with the cost of living and the low salary. Many good STEM teachers are switching careers to work in the industry instead of teaching because they cannot raise a family with low paying teaching job. It is very easy to a Math or Science teacher to get job in industry due to the shortage of programmers and the salary is much better. Many high schools do not have enough science or math teachers so they assigned history or geography teachers to teach Math and Science. Although most can do an adequate job but it cannot be the same as teachers who study Math and Science.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was something that I did not know and I was glad that he brought up something that I am really interested in. He continued: \u201cIn today’s society, students are growing up with information technology; they are relying on technology to communicate, collaborate, and learn. But most high schools are not embracing this change in student behavior because many teachers do not know much about technology. Instead of encourage technology, some schools forbid students to bring smart phones, laptops into classroom as they are still teaching the traditional way. Education has been doing the same way of teaching for hundred years. However today students do not like to sit quiet and listen anymore, they prefer to have a more dynamic classroom where they can discuss and contribute. Instead of continuing this tradition teachers should learn about bringing technologies to classroom. Since students are more knowledgeable about technologically, teachers need to keep up with the technology too. The best way to encourage STEM careers is to start with the teachers. Instead of give direction and hope for the best, government must focus on laying the STEM foundation in high school by starting with the teachers, not the students.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked: \u201cSo you think we must bring more technologies to high school?<\/p>\n

He explained: “Students are excited about the technologies they are using, but then they come to school and are asked to put them aside. That is not encouraging but discouraging. The only way we are going to close the gap is figuring out how to get teachers to use technology tools to inspire students learning. I am not asking that schools spend money on buying more computers or other types of technology. However I believe we must train all high school teachers on technology. To get more teachers involved in STEM education, teachers should be trained on STEM first. There is a fear among many teachers that STEM is a difficult topic to teach. We need to set priority in hiring teachers who studies Math, Science and technology in college. We need teachers who love STEM, who are passionate about STEM, who like to share with students their enthusiast.
