A student wrote to me: “I am planning to go to the U.S. to study Business Administration, but my uncle told me that Business is NOT a STEM field of study, and I will not be able to stay and work there. Is Business Administration a STEM field or not? Please advise.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Business Administration is NOT a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields but it is one of the most popular fields of study in U.S. universities. There are more students enrolling in Business Administration than any other fields. The Business field consists of five key areas: Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Management, and General business. However, if you are interested in finding a job after graduate, you need to select the areas that have high demand.<\/p>\n
Although I do not teach business, I asked several business professors at Carnegie Mellon, and they told me that students who study general business, management and marketing are often having difficulty to find a job because there are so many of them and the supply has exceeded the demand. Since the financial crisis, there are hundreds of thousand experienced people in these areas who are still looking for work and the competition is fierce. A newly graduate in management or marketing with no experience will have difficulty to compete with these people. However, if you study Finance or Accounting, you will have better chance to get a job, and the salary is also higher.<\/p>\n
One professor explained to me that both Finance and Accounting require strong mathematics skills such as calculus and statistics which many students do not like. These two areas are harder than others so fewer students would select them as compared with those pursuing a general business degree or management. To prepare to study Finance or Accounting, you need to have good reading skills because business fields require a lot of reading and writing. Of course, you will need to have good math foundation to handle courses such as calculus, statistics, probability, and some basic computer skills.<\/p>\n
Please understand that NOT all STEM fields are equal, many students with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, are still having difficulty to find work as most jobs in these areas require advanced degree (MS and Ph.D.) From what I know, Finance and Accounting are two areas in business that still have good demand. While go oversea to study, you should spend the time to read more about the changing market demand and adjust your study accordingly. Do not think you have to study what you select when applying to any university. You can change to any fields of study in the first year or even second year. Your knowledge and skills, NOT your degree will help you to success in your career.<\/p>\n
