My concerns when teaching in Asia<\/p>\n
When teaching in Asia, I found that a majority of students were still following their family\u2019s expectation when choosing the fields of study. The tradition expectations are limited to Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental, and family\u2019s business. All of these are great, but there are more great fields with excellent job opportunities that some families may not know.<\/p>\n
I have talked to several parents about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) but few people even know about them or what they are. Of course, STEM is a broad term consists over 185 fields of study, but there is NOT enough information about STEM as well as the way to teach and learn them effectively. Even when they know about STEM, there is NOT enough information about preparation, education requirements, job opportunities, salaries, and career planning resources.<\/p>\n
I often advised students: \u201cSelecting a field to study requires a career planning that includes investigation, decision, planning, and commitment because it is your life and your future. Having a degree is only the first page in the book of life, NOT the last page. What you learn in school will help you to build a foundation, but you have to continue to learn throughout your life. What you study may only reflect the interests at one moment in your life and what you will do in the future may not be the same as what you study in school. The fact is things will change, and the best way to succeed is to continue learning and adjusting to these changes. Therefore, \u201clifelong learning\u201d is a necessary, and you need to develop this habit when you are still young.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asian students often told me that they go to college to \u201cget a degree\u201d then \u201cget a Job\u201d then the conversation ended because not many of them even thought of anything further. No one knows that today there is no \u201csecure job\u201d that last a lifetime and they need to have a \u201clifelong learning\u201d to keep their job and maintain a \u201cstable living.\u201d Many students select a field of study to please their family even they do not think they can do well in it because they do not have a choice or cannot make a decision on their own. In any field of study, you need passion and skills to succeed. You cannot learn physics if you do not like math. You cannot learn computer if you do not like to write code.<\/p>\n
One of the major weaknesses of Asian students is they do not read much. Especially reading something deeply to understand the \u201cinsight.\u201d For many years teaching in Asia, the major complaint in my class is \u201cToo many readings.\u201d When I challenge them on their knowledge, most failed. Students told me that there were few readings to broaden their knowledge in high school but a lot of memorization on specific things to pass exams. The pressure of passing exams has \u201cdistorted\u201d many generations who can recite formulas and recall facts but could not apply to anything. Even in college, many students would read facebook, twitter, and internet news about sports and movies stars but could not even finish a hundred pages book.<\/p>\n
A few years ago, a U.S. manager who went to recruit students in Asia told me: \u201cI ask them about the \u201cflat world.\u201d But most believed that I tricked them and answered: \u201cThe world is round, not flat.\u201d When I mentioned the book \u201cThe world is Flat\u201d by Thomas Friedman, most answered: \u201cNever heard about it.\u201d He lamented: \u201cAs technology students but do not know about the \u201cflat world\u201d or trends in technology, how could they survive in this competitive market?\u201d Another manager who worked for Amazon also told me that one of the key questions during a job interview is: \u201cName five books that you have read in the past year.\u201d And over 90% of students failed even to name a single book.\u201d He said: \u201cYou want to work for the largest bookstore in the world but do not even read a single book, how could you expect to get a job here?\u201d<\/p>\n
I do not know why today so many Asian students are obsessed with making money. When talking to them, all I hear is about making money, the more, the better. There is an \u201cillusion\u201d among them that create \u201cstartup\u201d can make a lot of money. I advise them: \u201cIf money is your goal, buy a lottery ticket. You have a better chance to get rich than start your company.\u201d Many students also lack the discovery skills; they often rely on someone to make the decision for them or give them direction. Students often asked: \u201cCan you give me advice, or can you help me to find something.\u201d I told them: \u201cThere are many information on the Internet where you can find them, or you can find them in the library.\u201d But if I do not help, they will not try to find what they need. For example, the most popular question is \u201cCan you tell me what field to study that can make a lot of money.\u201d I answered: \u201cThere are some fields of study provide a better salary than others, but you will have to work harder and compete fiercely for those positions.\u201d I also warned these students not to be greedy; else they will be disappointed because money is not everything.<\/p>\n
Many students told me that they are \u201ctired of learning\u201d just to pass exams but do not know what else to do. I have seen many 18-year-olds or even 22-year-olds have \u201cexhausted\u201d because too many materials to learn just to pass the annual exams. This type of learning is not suitable if students continue to an advanced degree or further their study oversea.\u00a0 Today, some Asian families realize that their education system cannot change fast enough and a college degree is no longer guarantee for anything. Therefore they are investing all their savings money to their children\u2019s future by sending them to study abroad. The hope is that they will learn some useful skills and after graduate, they can get a good job and start earning.<\/p>\n
However, without preparation, many students are having problems oversea. I have seen education statistics indicated that the rate of failures among \u201cunprepared\u201d and \u201cimmature\u201d Asian students is quite high. I have met many students who spent several years in college without graduate, and they are frustrated. There are several factors but mostly is their inability to adapt to the different style of learning in U.S. schools. Some people would blame the problem on language, but even students who spent many years in U.S. schools are still having difficulty. From what I have learned from these students, the \u201clack of preparation\u201d is the number one cause of their failure. There is a difference in the way of studying in Asia and U.SSchools. Memorization and cramming few weeks before exams are a guarantee to fail. Not having a good reading habit, inability to finish the textbooks and take notes in class are another major difficulty for many Asian students. Of course, spending family\u2019s money on parties, excessive drinking and other bad habits are also another causes.<\/p>\n
But the current issue is some education systems cannot change, or not change much. There is no alternative way for their students, and the statistics keep showing the number of unemployed college graduates continue to rise. Without proper action, it will push these countries back at least twenty to fifty years. With the fast pace of technology change, they will never be able to catch up.<\/p>\n
