Finding a Job or Starting a company?<\/p>\n
When teaching Entrepreneurship in Asia, I have an interesting conversation with many students where some told me that because they cannot find a job, they would like to start a company. In another word, “startup” is another way of making a living.<\/p>\n
I told them: “That is a big mistake, Entrepreneurship is not a job, it is a passionate business. As a business, you put in your time, your efforts as well as your money, and if you make a mistake, you will lose everything. Startup requires more than a job because you have to put a lot of time and efforts and willing to take risks. If you are not dedicate everything to your startup but treat it only like just a job, you will never succeed.”<\/p>\n
Another student asked: “Then what could we do if we do not have a job?”<\/p>\n
I explained: “You should spend all your time to find a job rather develop your startup. Looking for a job is a “full-time job” itself. You should not do startup “half-way” and lose money or your family’s money.”<\/p>\n
A student argued: “But you told us that we must learn from the mistake.”<\/p>\n
I explained: “It is correct if you are willing to take the risk. If you have a passion for startup and willing to do whatever you can to achieve the dream, then startup is a good idea. You may fail five times or ten times but continue to learn and do it again then I think you should do a startup. However, if you cannot find a job and startup is the excuse, then you should NOT do that. What happens if you start a company and a few months later you get a job offer? Would you continue with the startup or abandon it for the job? You cannot do anything “half-way.” The startup is not something you do when you do not have anything else to do. It is a commitment to achieve your dream.”<\/p>\n
Another student argued: “But you teach us that if the idea does not work, change into something else. Entrepreneurs should be flexible and keep trying until they find something that works.”<\/p>\n
I explained: “It is correct. If you have the idea, but if there is no customer, then you must change into something else. In a startup business, failure is a common thing, and as long as you can learn from the mistake and continue to start again with another idea, it\u00a0 distinguishes you as a “true entrepreneur, ” NOT a “want to be an entrepreneur.” The same thing also happens when you are looking for a job. You should spend more time to identify what the company needs and what you have, and if there is a gap, you will need to fill it. As long as you have most of the skills that company needs, you will do well. There are many risks in a startup, and if you need something more stable, more secure, more consistent, then I think you should focus on finding a job working for a company. Do not take risks and regret later. Either you do a startup or finding a job; you cannot do anything “halfway.” That is a sign of a disaster.<\/p>\n
