A student wrote to me: “I will go to college next year. My parents want me to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) but my interest is in literature and arts. I am a good student in both math and science and always achieve a top grade in class, but I also have a strong passion for literature and wish to be a writer. I am torn between following my parents ‘ wish or pursue my interest. I believe that you should learn things that you love and follow your passion, if you do not like something, you will not learn much. I am under a lot of pressure from my parents but do not know what to do. Maybe you can help, please advise.”<\/p>\n

Answer: I agree with you that you should learn things that you are interested, and you may not succeed if you study something that you do not like. However, there are fields of study that you must study in college, and there are fields such as literature, and arts, that you could still learn later in life, through reading, self-study, personal experience, or taking additional classes. You are young and have a bright future ahead, but you need know that in today’s environment, timing is very important.<\/p>\n
First, you can only learn STEM fields in college, where you have teachers and classmates to help you learn, answer your questions, and work with you to solve difficult problems. You cannot learn STEM by reading books. You need a classroom with specialized equipment and instruction. You can only acquire knowledge and develop STEM skills for your future career in college.<\/p>\n
Second, if you do not do it now, you may not have another chance later. However, you have plenty of time to learn more about literature by reading books or taking classes later in life. If you have a successful career in STEM, who is going to stop you from writing or be a writer?<\/p>\n
As you are young, this is the time to learn and build a strong career when you still have time. While some people may advise you to follow your passion and do what you like, in reality, you should know what is best for you. Different things work for different people. You have to be practical about your choice, in the next few years, you have to be able to make your living independently.<\/p>\n
