Looking for job<\/p>\n
A fourth-year student wrote to me: “I will be graduating this June in Computer Science but still do not have any job offer yet. I have applied to many companies but do not have any interview. I am worried and do not know what to do. Please help.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Your email address is from a U.S. university, so I assume that you are graduating from a U.S. School. According to a recent industry report, there are more STEM job opportunities than people who qualify for the job, and without proper actions, this “skills- gap” will continue to increase in the next five years. The ‘skills gap’ is the term describe the difference between the skills that companies need, and the skills that graduates who are looking for a job have. Among these skills, technology has the largest gap, and many companies complain that this shortage would create a disadvantage to their business.<\/p>\n
The question is why companies do not train workers for the skills that they need? In the past, companies hired graduates and trained them to do the job. But with technology changes fast, it is difficult to provide up-to-date training because companies are not in training business and few would like to invest in the training for fear that after training, workers would leave for a better job elsewhere. Therefore, they prefer to hire experienced people who can work immediately and will pay more than recent graduates with no experience.<\/p>\n
Last month, the U.S Government data showed that the demand for graduates in science and technology areas was much higher than previously predicted. There were over 420,000 advertised opportunities without qualified applicants. In January, there were more than twenty-five open positions advertised for every graduate in computer science. The report stated that computer areas have the highest demand rate of any occupational category in America.\u00a0 Among the highest demand occupations are Data scientists, System Security Specialists, Cloud Computing Specialist, Software Developers, Mobile App Developers (mobile phones and tablets and Internet of Thing, etc.).<\/p>\n
As a computer science student, you need to review your technical skills to identify what you have and compare with the skills that are required for the jobs that you want, to identify the skills gap. Since you only have a few months before graduate, I think the best way to close this gap is to take additional Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to develop the skills. Many companies begin to accept MOOC courses as evidence of your education on the subject. Of course, you will be asked to demonstrate your skills during the interview.<\/p>\n
To get a job, you need to think about how you present yourself to the hiring companies. You need to write a good r\u00e9sum\u00e9, improve your covering letter.
