Could robotics technology disrupt the restaurant business? If I want to be a cook, do I have to worry about losing the job to robots? Please advise.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Answer: Yes, anything that can be done manually can also be done by robots. At Carnegie Mellon Robotics lab, the robots can serve coffee and cookies. I often go to the lab and program these robots to do a few things as a demonstration to students in my “New Technologies and Future market” class. By telling the robots: “Bring me a cup of Coffee and some cookies.” The robots would make “instant coffee,” put in the Microwave oven to heat it up and bring it to the table. Most students are excited about it when they begin to learn about automation. My robots can only do simple things, but there are more advanced robots that can do much more such as cook meals in the kitchen.<\/p>\n There is a short video on Youtube about a “Robot-chef cook” that can cook several meals. This robot can learn by watching human actions then converting these motions into precise movements. According to the video, a cook is preparing a meal, and the robot records all of the motions into a software program. After that, the robot can repeat the same thing (i.e. learn to cook). The company announced that they would sell this robot in the next few years with a software app containing several hundred recipes for users to tell the robot what they want to cook. The robots also have eyes (cameras) so that users can teach it to create their dishes, which can then be uploaded to a “recipe library” and shared with other people.<\/p>\n To answer your question: Of course, robots can cook but whether they will disrupt the restaurant business or not, is still depending on the cost of operation. Today these robots are very expensive so hiring a cook is much cheaper than buying robots. If you want to be a cook, I do not think you have to worry about robots taking your job, at least until the cost of robots go down significantly.
