I organized my lecture carefully each day before the class. A few years later, I took a course on active learning method and began to change the way I teach, and eventually became good at this method. However, after many years of teaching, I changed the way I teach according to each level of students.<\/p>\n<p>Most first-year students are not familiar with how to study in college, and many are not mature enough to be responsible for their studying. There is a difference between high school and college learning, but many students are not prepared, so I focus on lecturing and give them clear direction to follow.\u00a0 I tell them exactly what to do, how to do it, and when they must complete the work. Students learn by listening, taking notes, follow instructions, and apply the concepts to solve problems in weekly exercises and quizzes. One of the key activities for the first year students is to make sure that they develop good reading skills. I assign a lot of readings, but mostly on technology news, to broaden their knowledge and let them know what is happening in the industry, and how their career is relating to the job market. First-year students need concise instructions because they are easy to get confused or get distracted by other activities. They need to know what they must do to succeed and develop good studying habit to build the foundation for the following years. My view for teaching first-year students is about motivation and help them to develop good studying skills.<\/p>\n<p>By the time students go to the second year, I begin to focus more on class discussions to promotes learning through interaction. Students must read the course assignments before coming to class, and prepare to discuss in class. In the beginning, I often give a short lecture to give an overview of the topic to get them to think. Then I start the discussion by asking students to respond to my questions. By listening to students response, I know how much they understand the concept and determine whether they still confuse about the materials and answer their questions. The goal at this level is to encourage them to develop the critical thinking by focusing on facts and data. As science and technology students, they must learn to use facts to back up their views. I often told them: &#8220;If you cannot prove it with facts and data, your opinion does not count,&#8221; Or &#8221; You have to prove your hypothesis with fact, else it is only a guess.&#8221; During this time, I want to make sure that all students are participating in the class discussion, and no one dominates the discussion. I often call on students who do not participate to answer questions and encourage them to talk more. By listening to their discussion, I learn how students think and how they put logic into their reasoning and correct them when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>When students go to the third year, they should be ready to learn by themselves with minimum guidance from the professor. By this time, many students already develop good reading skills, and they are more open, curious, and interested in learning from the materials that I assigned. Instead of asking questions, I have students created their own questions and discuss among themselves. I told them that they would have to talk more since I only listen to their discussions. I divide the class into several small teams of three to five students, have each team select a team leader, define roles and responsibilities for each member. I assign &#8220;case study&#8221; to each team and have the team present the case to the class and let them challenge each other for discussion. By letting students asking questions and answer among themselves, I encourage them to develop &#8220;critical thinking&#8221; and &#8220;problem solving&#8221; skills.\u00a0 By allowing them to work more independently, they also begin to develop the &#8220;Lifelong learning&#8221; skills.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth year is focusing on the capstone project where students show you what they can do when working independently on a project assigned by mentors from the industry. This is their first chance to work with people outside the academic area where they learn to plan and manage their project according to certain expectations. The students learn how to set up schedules, milestones and divide works among themselves. They also have to interact with people from the industry to get answers to their questions and learn more about how business operate. As a professor, I observe their progress and correct any mistakes when needed, but the goal of this level is to see how students can transform themselves into professionals and be successful in their career.<\/p>\n<p>From my experience of using different teaching styles at each level, I could help students to learn, grow, develop good learning habit, become more independent and ready to work in the industry. If we continue to use one style of teaching such as lecturing, students may lose interest in learning or become solely dependent on the professor for guidance and not mature enough when they graduate. By changing the teaching style each year, you force the student to adjust and adapt to the learning environment and be more responsible for their studying.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there is no perfect teaching style, and each professor would prefer a certain style over others.
