A few years ago when teaching in Asia, I encountered a situation when students complained about reading assignments in the textbook. A student complained: \u201cThe assigned reading in the textbook is too long and too difficult.\u201d Another added: \u201cDo we have to read the entire chapter? It is too much, can you summarize it for us?\u201d Another student asked: \u201cWe only need to know which part is important that you will be on the test?\u201d<\/p>\n
I was surprised and asked myself: \u201cDo these students wanted me to extract important materials from textbooks and summarized into something short and easy for them to read?\u201d So I asked the class: \u201cIs this the way other professors are doing here?\u201d The students explained: \u201cMany professors summarize each chapter for us to read; others organize them in their powerpoint presentation so that we can study from the powerpoint.\u201d To understand the situation better, I asked: \u201cSo what type of book are you reading now? How many books do you read besides the textbooks?\u201d The students looked at me as I was asking something beyond their belief. Several students answered: \u201cWe do not read books anymore, they are boring.\u201d\u00a0 I was shocked: \u201cEven Science books? History books, Romances or Martial arts novels? One student said: \u201cFor those novels, most of us prefer to watch movies and TV shows instead of reading books.\u201d<\/p>\n
I have been teaching in Asia for many years, but in the past few years, I encountered a new generation of college students who do not read much. These students grew up with technology devices such as iPods, iPads, iPhones, etc. Many do not read much because they never fully develop the reading skills. When they were young, instead of books, their parents often bought them iPhones and Nintendo. Technology such as video games, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram have made them into passive readers who only read something short, and entertainment. When they have to read, many only glances through a few pages and the summary. They cannot identify important information from the textbooks, and their knowledge is \u201cshallow.\u201d Some even have difficulty with the sentence structure because they used to read short sentences in the abbreviation of \u201cTwitters style.\u201d<\/p>\n
Why do these students do not read textbooks anymore? Because teachers tend to lecture on the course materials, and students find it easier to let them lecture because all they have to do is just sit and listen. Some professors want to make sure that students will pass the test, so they summarize the important materials for them to read which make them more passive and lazy. A professor admitted: \u201cToday, students do not read much because there are many things that distracted them. We have to summarize the materials for them, at least they will learn something.\u201d I was surprised: \u201cBut if students do not read, how could they have a deeper understanding of the material? Without reading skills, how can they develop a \u201cdeeper understanding\u201d of the concepts and go further into their learning?\u201d He shook his head: \u201cWe can only do so much. Whether they learn or not is their problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
I do not accept this view. The goals of education are not just transmitting knowledge and let students passing tests, but preparing them for their lives ahead and contribute to the society. I want to see students be passionate about learning, be lifelong learners where they always learn new things and be able to think critically and solve problems in their lives. All of that begin with the development of deep knowledge from reading books. By reading many books, they can look at things from many perspectives, learn from others, and develop the courage to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. We cannot develop the next generation of students who do not read much but depend on someone who helps them to summarize facts so they can memorize and passing exams, that would be a disaster for the society.<\/p>\n
Being an avid book reader, I wanted to tell students that they will be missing so many wonderful things in life if they do not read books. It does not matter to me whether they read from printed books, laptop,iPads, or iPhones, but they must read books. What they do not understand is TV, movies and video games display the stories for them, and they can be passively watching without thinking, while books allow them to imagine the contents, the scenarios which make the brain working actively. Many scientists believe the creative talent starts with reading and innovations happen when people can imagine. When teaching at the university, I require a lot of readings to make sure my students develop a good reading habit.<\/p>\n
After listening to several students, I decided to give them as a short lecture: \u201cReading is part of your learning. You are responsible for your learning, and you must take an active role in the learning process. For my class, you must come to class \u201cprepared\u201d which means you must read the assigned chapter in the textbook before coming to class. In my class, I will not talk much,\u00a0 but you must do the talking about what you are reading and learning. All of you will have to read more than a few chapters in the textbook. You will have to read a variety of news articles to understand what is happening in the industry, and in the world so that you can relate them to your career and your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a visiting professor who only came here to teach in the summer, and we only have ten weeks. But what you learn in this class will help you in the future. Whether you will continue to further your study in the Master or Ph.D. levels or finding jobs and build a career here, you need to have good reading skills. No, I will not summarize anything, and I will not give you a short powerpoint presentation because I\u00a0 want to give you the opportunity to improve your reading skills. By reading the materials before coming to my class, you will have a better understanding of the concepts. By reading before coming to class, the class discussions will be more meaningful to you. By listening to many different views, you can integrate different views and concepts into your understanding. By reading before coming to class, you will have a chance to ask me something that you do not understand.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you read a textbook or a scientific article, you are not just learning the concept but also seeing they way these concepts are structured. It is important for you to understand how each chapter is organized, and how each section is validated with facts and data from research, and how the terminologies are indexes. That is how all technical materials and papers should be written. By familiar with this organizing, it will prepare you for what you will have to do if you continue to the advanced degree programs (MS or Ph.D.)\u201d<\/p>\n
