The future of education: a personal perspective<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: “It is easy to talk about the need to improve the education system, but it is difficult to change if we do not know what it could be. What is your vision of the education in the future? Please advise.”<\/p>\n
I wrote to her: “I am sure the education system in the future will be different from today. When technology changes, many things will change, and education is not the exception. How much does it change? How fast does it change? How does it look ten years or\u00a0twenty years from nowis depending on many factors. There are many different ideas about what the education of the future will be. But I would like to see that:<\/p>\n
“All high school students receive proper guidance about career opportunities since the 10th grade and plan their career accordingly before going to college. When they go to university, all of them have a well-written career plan or roadmap that details all the courses that they must take to meet the needs of the career that they selected. Their career roadmap is a list of knowledge and skills, developed by both the education system and the industry that all graduates must possess to get a job in the industry. The roadmap clearly defines the skills and performance that students must achieve.”<\/p>\n
“All teaching instructions are videotaped and placed online to accommodate a large number of students. Students who live in different places, from big cities to small villages, can still learn from the same professors as they can watch the lectures online. But they must come to class to work in teams and participate in the class discussion under the guidance and coaching of qualified teachers.”<\/p>\n
“All training materials are standardized to ensure the quality of the education system. The teaching materials and instructions are continuously improved based on software that collects students’ performance in classes. All education data and information are collected, analyzed, and summarized into a “dashboard” provide to both school administrators and parents on a monthly basis so they can track progress.”<\/p>\n
“All students are working in a team to develop their knowledge and skills. The class curriculum is organized into several modules. Each module focuses on a particular knowledge or skill that students must learn. Students will be able to identify, explain, employ, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize knowledge and develop skills that they can use. Each module will be organized and make it easy for students to learn from their mistakes. Students will recognize that making a mistake is a part of the learning process, not a failure. Each module is equal to some credits. As students accumulate enough credits, they will graduate.”<\/p>\n
“All classrooms are designed to be places where students learn to collaborate and to work together to solve problems under the supervision of qualified teachers who oversee their learning and assess their performance. Throughout the time in college, students will have many chances to visit the place of employment where they meet professionals who work there. Via proper guidances, conversations, and observations, students can develop an “insight” into their fields of study and future career.”<\/p>\n
“All students will spend about a third of their education time working as interns or apprentices in the industry to learn more about their career from the practical point of view, not just theories. Their knowledge and skills during this time will be evaluated by industry coaches who are also working with school teachers to ensure that students will have the skills needed when they graduate. Students’ performance data during this time will also be collected and analyzed for further improvement by the education system.”<\/p>\n
“All students consider education in school is only a part of their learning process. Learning will continue into their working lives. All students will develop a lifelong learning attitude.”<\/p>\n
Of course. These are my wishes of what the future education system might be. I am sure there are details to be worked out. But I will leave it for many of you to add your views and the details. I hope that by working together, we can help improve our education system for future generation and the future of our society.<\/p>\n
