We had lunch together, and I asked him about his college recruiting effort. He told me: &#8220;Traditionally, most companies are looking for experienced workers because they do not need to train them, but that is a mistake. I prefer hiring college graduates, with or without experience. Why do we require students to have experience when they are still studying in school? Even some may work for a few months in the summer, but that is irrelevant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I am surprised: &#8220;Why are you prefer to hire college graduates even without experience?<\/p>\n<p>James explained: &#8220;All graduates want to have a job, so they will try to do their best and work harder than others. Since they just graduate, they are eager to learn more to succeed. They are willing to get a &#8220;lower salary&#8221; than experienced workers. I am not talking about &#8220;Very low salary, &#8221; but with little to no experience, these graduates do not demand a lot. Since it is their first job, you can teach them almost anything, and they will learn fast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I asked: &#8220;But why not hire experienced workers?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>James explained: &#8220;It is difficult to train experienced workers who also have some bad habits. When interview experienced workers, I always ask them why do they want to leave their job. Their answer often varies between they do not like their company, or they want a career change. The fact is some of them get fired or do not have the skills that their company needs, so they have to find another job. If they do well and have a good job, there is no reason to change job. People who change job every few years, always have problems, and I do not want to bring problems or bad habits to my company. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I told him: &#8220;That is Interesting to hear your view because most companies are looking for someone with experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>James laughed: &#8220;New graduates are curious about how things work, and with their university studies still fresh in their minds, they will questioning how and why things work and may find a new way to improve the way company does business. Most graduates are more comfortable with newer technology when experienced workers tend to be more careful and sometimes even resist to learn new things. If there are new technologies emerge, hiring new graduates will get you the new technology knowledge and help the company to understand more about how the new technology work. College graduates have different perspectives on life and often have innovative and fresh ideas. They know more about current technology trends than others which will help to inject fresh ideas into the company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I asked: &#8220;So those are the reasons you want to hire more graduates this year?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>James nodded: &#8220;Today we are living in a competitive world which requires workers to work hard and contribute to the company. Most graduates are single; they do not have to worried about family and other commitments. They can work long hours per week as compared to experienced workers who have the family commitment and often work just enough or try to leave early to go home. I would like to hire more college graduates, as many as possible. But having a degree alone is not enough. The best graduates always learn new things beyond their curriculum in school to be competitive.
