We have an archaic education system where students do not want to learn, teachers do not want to teach, and school administrators are too busy in meetings and ignore the needs of the society. \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wrote back to her: \u201cIt is easy to blame people, but the solution is to fix the problem, not the people. There are always obstacles in whatever you do, and education is no difference. As the world is changing, people can be part of the change, or it will leave them behind. As a teacher, you can be a solution or a problem, and that is your choice. Today, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are four areas that have a significant impact on the society, regardless where you live. Most good jobs are based on STEM fields, and most companies will be hiring more workers with STEM skills. In this technology-driven economy, no country can prosper without a STEM workforces.\u00a0 As the world is becoming more complex with difficult issues such as global warming, air, and water pollutions, disappeared habitats, new diseases, and famines that cannot be solved by today\u2019s solutions, every country needs STEM workers who are trained to solve these complex issues. The challenge is how to develop enough STEM workers in a very competitive world. Many countries, especially developing countries, are having difficulty to keep their STEM workers they need because most can get better jobs in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>To develop STEM workers, it should begin with the education system and the teachers. The teachers are the key factor in getting students excited in STEM learning and speeding up the change. Teachers are the most educated and knowledgeable about the needs for the future, and they could improve education system to meet the society\u2019s demands. To start, additional STEM training for teachers is needed to implement some changes in the school systems. Of course, there are obstacles to this approach. First, STEM teachers must be positioned and awarded accordingly for their efforts to make change happen. And they must be supported as investing in STEM education must be nurtured from the beginning. Secondly, the challenge is to find the right teachers who are willing to learn new things with enthusiastic and energy to overcome the resistance to change from the archaic system as you mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>To attract students to study STEM, we must start early by introducing young children to STEM career opportunities and getting them excited about learning science and technology. To keep students interested, it is important to continue with more STEM classes throughout their school years \u2013 from elementary to high school. But STEM teachers cannot do it on their own, but parents have to involve too. Because STEM is so important for the future generation, we need to encourage both the students currently in school, as well as future generations of students, to understand how science and technology will affect them in their lives. High school students should be encouraged to taking as many science and technology courses as possible. And these courses need to be taught by enthusiastic teachers who know how to use new teaching method and hands-on activities to get students to engage and solve problems.
