Getting students to learn<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: \u201cI try to follow your teaching advice, but my students do not like to read. Many do not read anything more than one page and often complain about too much reading. They do not participate in class discussion and often do not answer my question. Many rather listen to a lecture. What can I do to promote student learning better? Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today most students do not read much because they did not develop the reading habit when they were young. But they will read something that they like so you may want, to begin with, easy and interesting articles to encourage them to read (For example, the new iPhone, the issues of Samsung Note, or new VR systems, etc.) and ask them to write a half-page paragraph about it. You may want to add a question that they must answer then during class discussion, you can read some of these answers as a topic for students to discuss.<\/p>\n
As a teacher, you need to build a new learning environment that encourages students to participate by allowing them to share their view on the certain subject. (i.e., Why Amazon is growing so fast? Why is Samsung having many problems? What are the hot technology devices this year etc.?) As a teacher, you should let them talk and discuss with others because most students have not comfortable with the new learning approach yet. They still like to learn something easy, memorizing a little information, and doing the minimum to pass the test. The new classroom learning environment should present something that captivates their attention, arouses their curiosity, stretches their minds, and makes them feel they have learned something interesting.<\/p>\n
This is not easy because as teachers, we often make all the decisions about learning for students. We decide what students will learn, how they should learn, the conditions that they must learn, and whether they have learned it or not based on passing tests. In this new approach, you should let them start making small decisions such as what topics they want to discuss, what concepts they want to learn, and as teachers we can watch what happens to their participation. As teachers, we are the motivator, the coach, the guide, and support person but students must take the active role of learning by reading, talking, discussing in class. In the end, the teachers will summarize what students have discussed and what they have learned on that day and ask questions so students can prepare and readied for the next class.,<\/p>\n
To make sure that students will learn, the teachers should give short quizzes each week (Two to three questions) and repeat the concepts several times to ensure that they can understand the course content and learn something.<\/p>\n
