A first year student wrote to me: \u201cI am very happy that I have selected Computer Science to study. As indicated in your blog, this is a field with bright future and has a global shortage. I want to be successful, I want to get a good job and build a good career that will make my family proud. I am very motivated to pursue this career. What do I need to succeed? Please advice.<\/p>\n

Answer: As a motivated student, you probably do not need any advice. If you want to succeed in anything, you must put your effort in it. As college student, it means you must go to class everyday and study hard. However it is important to know the difference between being busy and being productive. I have seen many students go to classes diligently but not do well. The reason is they are busy but not productive. They sit in class but their minds are somewhere. They seem to take notes but actually writing emails to friends. They use laptop or smart phones to surf from one website to another without direction and without knowing that net surfing is addictive and time-consuming, but not productive.<\/p>\n

Another key element for success is learning to be a problem solver. Many students memorize things just to pass tests but do not know how to apply it to anything. You must learn how to apply what you have learned to solve problems. I often give students unclear problem to solve to see how they react to it. Some students jump into coding immediately, when thing do not work, they try to rewrite their code again and again. Others start the design with some diagrams then give up and complain that things do not work. However there are few who read the problem statement careful and begin to ask questions. They try to figure out what is the problem before solving it. These are students that I consider would do well in their careers.<\/p>\n

As college student, you need to have a broader view of everything. Many students often focus too much into details but forget the big picture. They have \u201ctunnel view\u201d that often obscures their ability to think outside of the box. They may be very good technically but lack the overall knowledge to be successful. Whatever you do you must be able to relate it to a bigger picture by learning to ask, to question and knowing what you want to accomplish. Technical skills are good but not enough; you also need business skills and soft-skills.<\/p>\n

To succeed you also need teamwork skills. By working with other students and form team, you can expand your knowledge and learn more from each other. Not only this can improve your soft-skills but it also builds a friendship that may last a long time.<\/p>\n

Many technical students do not pay attention to foreign languages but knowing another language such as English is very important. Today there are many textbooks, e-books, technical articles written in English, many tutorials and on line courses are also taught in English. By having English proficiency you have more opportunities to learn new things and could even have opportunity to work for foreign companies.<\/p>\n

Many students only focus on what they learn in school but not pay attention to anything else. We are living in a globalized world and students must have knowledge of what is going on elsewhere. Today with the Internet, they can learn about world events, economic trends, technology innovations, market trends and by knowing this information, they can set their direction and goals for their career. It is essential for them to keep open minds and continue to learn about all the scientific progresses that are happening around them.<\/p>\n

We are living in a globalized world where competition is getting fierce. By the time you graduate, you will have to compete with many people for the position that you want. Some of them may be in your class, in your school, in your country but some may be in other countries too. If you pay attention, you will see that there are many students who are studying hard like you and are highly motivated like you. When you go to the library, you may see some are already there and they are still there when you go home. Those are the people who are going to compete with you for the job someday.<\/p>\n

Some students consider success as having a degree and a good job. I expect more than that. I expect successful students to be responsible person with their family, their society, and their country. They should have integrity and a good moral character to contribute to their society in a positive manner. Since you have expressed that \u201cYou want to make your family proud\u201d I know that you do think often about your family and that is a very good sign that you will become a very good person.<\/p>\n
