He said: “Although we are living in the information age where many things are available on the Internet but fewer students are developing good reading skills. Many prefer to read short magazine articles, or Facebook or Tweeter and their thinking are getting shallow, and few can comprehend or appreciate a good book. Today college students’ daily reading habits center around tweets, Facebook, and news about movies and musical stars, so they miss the real benefits of reading.”

I agreed: “You are correct, some students may not be able to explain basic concepts, but they are eloquent in the news about their favorite movies stars, but that is the issue of social media and the advent of technology. Students are reading many things but not thinking much, they cannot think deep enough to develop the “insight thinking.” And many could not develop the critical thinking skills to advance in their career. But how do we get students to read more?

Mike explained: “Reading is a habit that must be developed early. Particularly for children age 3 to 8 because that is the time when their brain is developing rapidly. Today not many families are encouraging their children to read but instead buy them video games or smartphones and hope that they know about technology. That is a mistake because, without basic comprehensions such as reading and thinking, these “mindless” video games will cause more harm. Instead of buying video games, I think parents should buy books for their children and reading these books together with them on a daily basis to encourage good reading habit. If young children do not develop the reading skills early in life, they will not read much when growing up. Today you can find many college students have a very bad reading habit. As I teach literature, so I know many cannot even complete a 100 pages book. There are medical studies that found people who did not read much often develop Alzheimer’s and Dementia disease by the time they reach their 50s because their brain is not active enough. The brain is similar to a muscle that requires exercise to keep it healthy. I am worried that soon we will have more people with dementia if they do not change their reading habit.”

I told him: “You are concerned about diseases, but I am worried about knowledge. Today information changes rapidly which require more reading, analyzing, thinking, making a decision and solving problems. Everything students read will give them more information as they need to have a broader knowledge to solve any problems they face. The more they read, the more knowledge they gain, and they will be able to understand clearly, thinking deeply and develop better decision making. Having broader knowledge is valuable for any profession. People who are well-read, well-spoken, and knowledgeable on a variety of topics from literature, history, science to economic and global events tend to get promotions quickly than those with limited knowledge.

Mike agreed: “You are correct, reading develop better analytical thinking skills. When students read a literature novel, they focus on details, follow the plot, determine the characters, and form an opinion. They pay more attention if the story is flowing smoothly, and the characters are developed properly. They discuss the book with friends and state their opinions and getting more people to read. When they read a book, all of their attention is focused on the story, many things of the world just fade away as they immerse themselves in the story and they can relax and enjoy the moment. But how do you make your students read technology books?

I told him: “I require my students to read technology articles BEFORE they come to my class. I often give a short quiz about the reading materials at the beginning of the class. If they read, they will do well, if not, they will have a low grade. I always start with few short articles at the beginning, about two to four pages. As time goes by in the semester, I add longer articles each week. For the last month before the end of school year, I require them to read the whole book and write a paper, at least ten to fifteen pages to state their opinion about that book. Most students do not like it when they start, but after a few months, many get used to it and do well. However, when they work in the industry, many wrote back and thanked me for all required readings, as it broadens their knowledge and helps them advance in their career.”

Mike was surprised: “I also require students to read literature books, but had difficulty in enforcing them. Many never complete the assigned books and did not do well in writing essay. I am surprised that your students are doing well.”

I explained: “It is difficult to get students to read what they do not like. You teach literature, you should select certain literature books that appeal to the students. Some students like classical literature, others like poetry, some prefer biographies or romance, etc. Instead of giving them only one type of book to read, you should give them a choice to select from the list of variety books that you made. The key is getting them to read more and enjoy the books.”

Mike asked: “So what kind of books do you assigned to your students? How do you select technology books?”

I explained: “Each week, I assigned two technology articles and one global article for them to read. These articles must relate to each other. For example, when they learn about technology, they have to read about hardware and software as well as human and computer interface. When they learn big data, they have to read about Hadoop and Non-SQL but at the same time reading an article on how big data being used in business or finance, or how it transforms the industry. My reading is concentrated on the knowledge that they need so they can apply, not a dry theoretical subject. After reading, students must discuss this topic in class to form certain opinions then debate with others to develop the deeper knowledge. I believe anyone who can read three technology articles per week, within three months that person will develop an interest in technology. Many students who attended my class were not sure whether they could succeed in the technology field. After several months of reading technology articles to broaden their knowledge, most told me that they like what they have learned and eventually did well in the technology field. My theory is “If you want to learn something, keep on reading about it.” Of course, to encourage students to study in any field, we need to start with getting them an interest in it. The best way is to start with reading. I like Benjamin Franklin quote: “Tell me what type of book that you read, and I can tell you what kind person you are.” So I use that approach in my class and require them to read more about technology.”

Tuần trước, tôi có cuộc đối thoại thú vị với Mike Shahan, một giáo sư văn học. Ông ấy nói: “Mặc đầu chúng ta đang …

[29

post-5152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-loi-khuyen-cho-giao-vien
["GET
