Among the unemployed today there is one special group: students who drop out of college without earning a degree.\u00a0In this globalized economy, a bachelor’s degree is the best path to a good career. Even with concerns about obsolete training in many colleges, recent graduates have lower rates of unemployment, higher earnings and better career prospects than their less educated people.\u00a0But as more students attend college, more are dropping out before they compete their education. That means millions of students are given up on their college dreams. Dropouts are more than four times as likely as being unemployed for a long time.<\/p>\n

According to a global study, students who do not graduate are the ones who are having the most problems in society. Many get into trouble with alcohol, drugs, and crimes because they have no hope for better future. As their numbers is still increasing, they could be a major problems for any society. The study found that there were over 84\u00a0million people over 25 years old who have taken some college courses but have not received a degree, a rate that grew quickly by 1.2 million each year.\u00a0The problem will have long-term economic implications as every country needs more college graduates in order to remain competitive. But increase the numbers of graduate means the education system must also change to accommodate the drop out problem.<\/p>\n

Even successfully completing a college degree is no guarantee of a successful career, especially in today’s global economy and the quick changing of industry needs. The study found that there were 49 million unemployed college graduates in the U.S and Europe, most of them younger than 30 because they graduated in fields that are no longer needed and most of them will remain either unemployed or force to work in jobs that do not even a college degree.\u00a0However those who do not graduate face even bleaker prospects. The unemployment rate for bachelor’s degree holders was 3.1%, versus 12.4% for those with only a high-school diploma and 9.8% for those who began college but did not finish.<\/p>\n

If we look closely, we may find that some students go to college without the knowledge and skills needed to do well in college. That is why many drop out in the first year and other struggle then drop out in the second year. This is a completely waste of time, efforts and create negative image for these students.\u00a0 As I have mentioned in my earlier blog, college is NOT for everybody, some would be better at vocational schools or at community college to learn certain skills. However, to prevent the number of college dropout, school must be actively assessing students after they get in to make sure that they could do the work. If needed, schools should recommend them to take remedial courses before allowing them to take regular courses. This is not easy because first year students do not like to take remedial courses. Some parents also criticize remedial courses as prolonging the time their children spend in college (If it is a private school, they think the school wants to make extra money). Few people realize the importance of remedial courses as a solution to ensure that students will be successful in their education.<\/p>\n

For many years of teaching, I often assessed students\u2019 capability when they enrolled in my program and if needed, recommended that they take some remedial courses. I found that the reason some did not do well in class because they did not have a good foundation when they were in high schools. By asked them to rebuild some fundamental skills, most of them eventually did well in regular classes, were able to graduate, and had the skills to succeed in the industry. However, many people do not believe that taking remedial courses such as math and science would make a difference. Students and parents are still questioning whether those remedial courses help students to improve their knowledge and skills needed to successfully complete regular courses.<\/p>\n

Last month, there was a research on remedial courses where the researcher investigated over 100,000 students enrolled math remedial courses in over 100 universities. To find out how well remedial courses were working, the researcher looked at the degree attainment (Did college students enrolled in remedial math courses go on to regular classes and attain a degree?). Using this factor he tracked students\u2019 progress in math courses for six years and its academic attainment after eight years.<\/p>\n

The result is obvious: Students who took remediate math courses successfully passed all regular courses comparable to that of students who achieve math skill without the need for remediation. This finding holds true even across the various levels of initial math skill deficiency. The author concluded that the two groups are \u201cindistinguishable\u201d from each other when it comes to degree attainment. This is a remarkable finding, as it indicates that remediation has the capacity to fully resolve the academic disadvantage of math skill deficiency. Remedial coursework not only works, it works extremely well.<\/p>\n

The solution is clear, if students do not have a good foundation in high school; it is important for them to take few additional remedial courses to ensure that they could catch up and obtain the knowledge and skills needed to complete their education goals. Even they may have to add few months to a year in college; it is still better than not complete and ends up in the unemployment number.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
