Technology changes quickly but getting the education system to change takes a long time. What happens if the education system does not change? Students will continue to learn materials that are obsolete and when graduate, they will not have the knowledge and skills that are needed in the job market and will be unemployed. Unless we do something NOW, the situation will remain the same, and the number of unemployed graduates will continue to grow, and a college education will lose its value.<\/p>\n
Last summer when teaching in Asia, I had several conversations with friends about the need to change the education systems. A friend said: \u201cThe current education system does not teach what students need to make a living in the 21st century. In the past, a college degree has good value and help graduates to get a comfortable living. Today a college degree does not mean much, resulting in many unemployed graduates. Even some who are employed are working in jobs that do not require a college degree.\u201d Another friend added: \u201cMany education leaders do not care about students because their goal is to keep their jobs.\u00a0 Even if they want to change, they do not know how. Parents and students know that but they have no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
I told them: \u201cThere is a choice in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) where students can access the best education systems in the world. Soon I think MOOCs will disrupt the traditional education system. We are now at a point where the impact to the economy is critical, and it will drive change. When unemployment is high, when companies need skilled workers but cannot find them, the law of supply and demand will find a way to fix it. I think many parents will find new ways to educate their children to make sure they can achieve success. Colleges and universities with obsolete curricula will face declining enrollment and probably will be replaced by a new technology-enabled education such as MOOCs and Online universities. The education revolution is already here, but it will take the time to be accepted by the public. Today companies are still hiring based on a degree instead of skills, but it will change. Currently, MOOCs is focusing on developing skills but do not issue degrees, at least not yet. Many university trainings do not teach soft skills like communication, presentations, business writing, and teamwork but MOOCs has many soft-skills courses. Soon I think MOOCs students can do better than traditional students and achieve greater career success.\u201d<\/p>\n

I explained: \u201cI think so if they are serious about learning. The issue is learning from MOOCs requires a lot of commitment and dedication because it is not a tradition classroom setting. Students must be self-directed and self-motivated, else; they will not learn much. Today the current issue is for every one hundred students enroll in MOOCs class, only less than five complete the course. Many quit or drop out halfway because they do not have strong enough motivation. Many are curious to take an MOOC class but not serious about learning.\u00a0 They do not want to do homeworks, apply concept to solve problems but only listen to lectures and not learn much. Since MOOCs do not charge money, anybody can enroll so there is nothing to lose. However, I think it will change by setting stricter enrollment and require some payment. Currently, MOOCs is still involving but it is getting better and soon can produce excellent students, and I have much hope for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we have two education systems: The tradition and the revolution. Most people are familiar with the traditional education system, so the enrollment is still high. However, soon when they realize that knowledge and skills are more important than a degree, thing will change. Soon technology entrepreneurs will seize the MOOCs approach, improve it, add more contents to it, bring a new way of teaching to the market and disrupt the traditional system. By that time, companies will look past the traditional way and begin hiring people based on what they need. Last year, companies such as Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Amazon began to hire \u201cNon-degreed\u201d people, many of them only completed several MOOCs courses, the market began to shift. A technology executive declared: \u201cWhy hiring university graduates with obsolete knowledge and skills where you can hire many people with up-to-date knowledge and skills, taught by the best professors from the best schools, but without a degree?\u201d<\/p>\n
The current market trends clearly indicate that most future jobs will be based on the advancement of science and technology. This means that more jobs will be opened in these areas. Today technology already being used in manufacturing, offices, business, finance, banking, and many government administration offices, etc.\u00a0 For example, computer software controls production, manage factory inventories, automate office works, and analyze, optimize for efficiency to maximize profits. Whether you like technology or not, every business is being impacted by technology, and currently, there are thousands of MOOC courses in technology areas. If you look at history, you will find that the law of supply and demand always work. The market is now driven by innovation, and education innovation such as MOOCs is likely to disrupt and eliminate the traditional systems.<\/p>\n
