Answer: Mathematics teaches you excellent skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and quantitative analysis which are essential in almost every jobs.\u00a0 If you study Mathematics in the U.S. you will learn computer programming because it is part of the curriculum requirements. About a third of students in my computer classes are majoring in mathematics. If you choose to study Mathematics, you should take additional courses in computer, business and statistics to increase your chance to get better job offers. If you have both skills in\u00a0 mathematics and computer, you can work in any company, any industry and anywhere.<\/p>\n
There are two mathematics programs taught in most U.S. university: Theoretical math and Applied Math. Theoretical mathematical focuses in the developing new principles and relationships between existing principles of mathematics. If you study theoretical mathematics, you need a Ph.D to work as an university professor or math researcher. Applied mathematicians use mathematical modeling and computational methods to solve problems in science, business, engineering, and technology. Although a Bachelor’s degree is sufficient for entry-level positions, but an advanced degree may open the door to better opportunities. There are several good jobs for Math graduates depending on your specialization.<\/p>\n
Many Math graduates work as Actuaries. The functions of actuaries is to help businesses assess the risk of certain events and formulate policies that minimize the cost of that risk. For this reason, actuaries are a high demand job in the insurance industry. Actuaries collect and analyze data to estimate the probability and likely cost of the occurrence of an event and address financial issue in which a company should invest to maximize its return on investments within a potential risk.<\/p>\n
Another popular job for math graduates is Statisticians who can work in a variety of fields within science, technology, business, health, and social sciences. For example, in an automobile company, they design experiments to determine the failure time of engines to improve quality of the cars. In pharmaceutical company, they develop and evaluate the results of laboratory tests to determine the safety and effectiveness of new medications. In software industry, they construct new statistical software packages to analyze data more accurately and efficiently. Most statistician jobs will require a master’s degree. Beside math skills, statistics works require good communication skills to explain statistical information clearly to people who do not have technical backgrounds.<\/p>\n
According to the U.S. government, employment of mathematicians is expected to increase by 22 percent during the 2010\u20132020 decade, which is much faster than other occupations. Advancements in technology usually lead to more applications of mathematics, and more workers with knowledge of mathematics will be required in the future.<\/p>\n
