Learning outcomes<\/p>\n
Today students need a different kind of teaching and motivation in learning to meet the job market\u2019s demand. The traditional memorization of books to pass exams and get a degree is no longer valid.\u00a0 The education goal should NOT be getting a degree but develop the needed knowledge and skills that allowing them to build a stable career that lasts for a long time.<\/p>\n
The \u201cActive learning\u201d method is built upon the principles of self-direction, motivation, deep knowledge and problem-solving where the learning is continuous to develop competencies through application and experiences.\u00a0 It is important for all teachers to understand this change so they can be prepared to take on their essential role in developing the next generation of highly skilled students. But the essential part of the new teaching approach is the motivation of students to learn because they also have to change their studying habit.<\/p>\n
For many years of teaching, I have a simple goal: \u201cTo make students ready to learn in my classroom.\u201d Of course, I could make them learn by threatening them with bad grades in my course if they do not do well. But if I put myself in the students\u2019 perspective how would they feel when the professor threaten them? It would not motivate them to learn much. They could do just enough to pass the course but never try their best. So what would be better? I think the best way to make students learn is to convince them that by self-motivation, and actively put more time and efforts in studying, they will receive something valuable.<\/p>\n
All teaching methods require the professors to design the course with learning outcomes. But most students do not pay attention to these academic learning outcomes as they are written mostly for the professors to assess their teaching. So I ask myself what do students want from taking my course? What can this course do for them? Finally, I come up with new learning outcomes from students\u2019 perspectives. I print out a short learning outcomes and give to them on the first day of class:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Complete a class project that can demonstrate their knowledge and skills to meet the industry\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

I explain to students that in my course, they will have to work on a class project sponsored by a company in the technology industry. The team members will be mentored by hiring managers from that company. The project will require them to solve a real problem in that company, and their solution will be used in that company.\u00a0 As a team member, they will be asked to give a presentation to hiring managers, whenever these managers come to lecture as guest speakers in my class.<\/p>\n
Because we are using \u201cActive learning\u201d method, students must read assigned material before coming to class and ready to participate in class discussion. Students will be asked to present certain topics that I assigned to them based on technical news or industry trend; that will require them to read more and learn more, so they will be able to develop a lifelong learning habit after the course. All of these activities will be graded and add to the final grade of the course.<\/p>\n
Since I have been working in the software industry for many years, I know a lot of software managers and companies. I invite these managers to be guest speakers in my class where they have a chance to know my students. I also ask them to sponsor real projects with real problems for students to solve. This collaboration between the university and industry also help them a chance to work with my students as well as my students have opportunities to demonstrate to them their knowledge and skills that may result in employment when they graduate.<\/p>\n
After many years of teaching, the approach of letting students know ahead what they will get from taking the course as well as the opportunity to work with managers who could hire them always motivate them to learn. Most students told me they like this approach because they know what knowledge that they need, what skills they must have, they know their direction and goals, and they understand that they must be self-motivated to develop the necessary skills to get hired. Nothing motivates students more than let them decide what to learn, how to study and plan their future career. They know that they are responsible for their success. I often remind them: \u201cYour future is depending on how much you put in your effort, I can only guide you, but you have to do the learning.\u201d<\/p>\n
