A conversation with a new professor<\/p>\n
As professors, our mission is NOT just teaching but also advising and supporting students because we want them to succeed. If we look back when we were students, some of us did well in school, so when we become the professors, the teaching comes naturally for us and sometimes we could not understand why students are having difficulty in learning something that is so obvious.<\/p>\n
I often told my colleague about having empathy for these students who were having difficulty and have patience with them. Last year, I talked to a new professor who criticized some students as \u201cslow learners.\u201d When I suggested that he slowed down his teaching to allow these students to catch up, he said:\u00a0 \u201cEverything is written in the textbook, if they do not read fast enough, that is their problem.\u201d He told me that he had explained clearly that all students must read the textbook before coming to class and follow instructions to do well in his class. He argued: \u201cWhy do I need to slow down my teaching? Students who read the textbook, follow my teaching and do well but there are some who could not catch up because of whatever reason, but that is not my problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
I asked him: \u201cWhen you were a student, was learning easy for you?.\u201d He confirmed: \u201cI was at the top of my class and graduated with honor because I followed all the instructions.\u201d I told him: \u201cBut as professors, we do not teach only top students but serve ALL students, some are good and some need additional help. We need to teach from the students\u2019 learning perspective NOT from our perspective.\u201d He seemed uncomfortable but did not say anything. I explained: \u201cWe are professors now, but we need to remember what it is like to be a student when we learn a new concept. Sometimes we learn well, but sometimes we have difficulty because the concept is too abstract, and we need time. I am sure you have difficulty too.\u201d He seemed to agree but asked: \u201cDo you have any difficulty learning something new? I told him: \u201cI always have difficulty when learning something new. I was not the best student in class. I struggled a lot and made many mistakes, but I was lucky because I had many professors who helped me. They allowed me time to learn and encouraged me to study. Because of these professors, I was successful in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n
He became curious: \u201cSo that is why you pay more attention to the slow learners?\u201d I told him: \u201cI was one of those slow learners, it took me more time to learn something. That is why when teaching, I always remind myself how do I learn when I was a student. I know that our learning influences the way we teach today and I always put myself in the students\u2019 perspective. As students, all of us did well in some courses but not others; we passed some tests and failed a few but how many of us look back at the way we learn?\u00a0 As students, we memorized a lot of books to pass exams; we knew something well and forgot many things, but over time, we learned to organize materials, structured them into knowledge. As professors, we learned teaching methods where we structured our knowledge in particular ways to teach, and we became good at it. But some of us forgot how we learn them at the first time. That is why some of us do not understand why something so easy, so obvious to us but why students could not understand them. We need to slow down and put ourselves into students\u2019 position when they learn something the first time then our teaching would become more efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n
He seemed comfortable with my explanation. I continued: \u201cSometimes we need to go back to school to learn something new, and it will put us in an uncomfortable position of being a student again to remind us about the learning process. A few years ago, I took a class on how to play the guitar. I never play any instrument in my life, so I was like any new students in class. I was confused about how to put my fingers in the right place. The music teacher laughed at my clumsiness and joked with me that I may be too old to learn. My guitar sounded so bad and made a lot of \u201cnoise,\u201d and I was embarrassed. All my previous learning was in reading, writing, thinking, and analyzing but these experience did not help me with music instrument. The music teacher had patience with me, he allowed me more time to learn, and after a few weeks, I was able to create a chord. The teacher said: \u201cThat is good progress, you need time to work on the next chords and maybe\u00a0in six months\u00a0you can play a song.\u201d That encouraged me to continue learning, else I may quit already.\u201d<\/p>\n
I believe how we learn will influence how we teach or how we would like to teach. Some of us like to lecture a lot when teaching because we learn well by listening. Some of us like to assign a lot of reading because we learn well by reading, and some of us like to give a lot of exercises because we learn well by solving problems. But we are teaching many students, they all have a different way of learning so we need to allow them time to catch up and be familiar with the way we teach. What we need is to have empathy for students because we are NOT just teaching them but also supporting them. It is important to remember this mission because it affects how our students learn.<\/p>\n
