What these students need<\/p>\n
For many years of teaching, I found that there were three types of student: Students who are doing well (i.e., You do not need to pay attention to them because they are self-motivated.) Students who are average but working hard (i.e., you only need to encourage them then they will do well because of their hard working) and students who perform poorly for a variety of reasons (i.e., you need to spend more time to help them so they can do well).<\/p>\n
Among the students who are doing poorly, some are not motivated to study, many do not have direction or goals, and few do not even care about education. These are the students who will frustrate every professor because of their low performance and sometimes bad attitude. How do you motivate them? How do you make them study? Most college professors were busy with teaching activities, so they ignored these students. Some told me that if students do not want to study, that is their problem as they will fail and quit school. I did not agree with this conclusion.<\/p>\n
In the first few years of teaching, I would call these students to my office and gave them stern warning such as: \u201cYou are wasting your time and your family\u2019s money. You have no future if you continue this way.\u201d Or \u201cHave you ever think about\u00a0 your future or your life?\u201d Some students felt bad and apologized, but their behavior did not change. After a few days, they behaved the same as before. After many failed attempts, I learned that warning did not work so I tried a different approach.<\/p>\n
I wanted to know which might interest these students; even that meant offering them different assignments. I asked them \u201cWhat would make this lecture more interesting to you?\u201d \u201cIs there anything that I could give you that would motivate you to do your best?\u201d Based on several conversations with these students, I learned that the main reason that they were doing poorly because they have no self-confidence. These are the students who were ignored by others professors for many years. Some were allowed to pass from one class to another without any guidance. Most of them also believed that they could not learn anything. Some told me: \u201cI only need enough score to pass the exam.\u201d Or \u201cI am not good at math.\u201d \u201cI am not good enough for your class.\u201d<\/p>\n
These students need someone who believes in them because without any efforts they will drop out of school with no skills and no future. If they do not fit in regular class, they need to learn in a different environment with a specific guidance, not vague advice such as \u201cwork hard,\u201d or \u201cBe diligence.\u201d After met with many of them, and understood their problems, I gave them a list of specific things to do and told them \u201cHere are what you need to do this week.\u00a0 After complete, you must come to see me and show me how you do it.\u201d Of course, some students did follow this advice, but many dropped out of my class, and I never saw them again. I knew it was not easy to make them follow this approach; it may be the toughest thing they must do to pass my course. But my solution does not about make them learn or develop their skills but help them to gain their self-confidence. Many problems that I assigned were simple so they could do them and received the feedbacks about their progress which they need. When they did well, I praised them: \u201cYou make good progress here? I know you could do it.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cThat is not difficult isn\u2019t it? I know you can solve this.\u201d After a few weeks, many students began to pay more attention to the assignments, and they were eager to come to my office to show me what they did. It only takes months for them to gain the confidence and eventually many can do well in class.<\/p>\n
After several years of helping these students, I can conclude that students who are doing poorly NOT because they do not have the skills but because they do not have the self-confidence. There are many reasons, but the most probable cause is their high school did not teach them the foundations well enough to succeed in college. Many students do not receive good advice to plan their career and to prepare for college. They need a clear guidance of what skills that they did not have and what they need to develop them. I believe that a \u201csupplementary course\u201d designed for those students in the first year of college is the best solution to solve this problem.<\/p>\n
Even students who do well in high school and passed the exams to go to college but not all of them are readied for college. They need help to gain self-confidence and guidance to develop the skills they need to succeed in college. Many students who are doing poorly because they are not ready. They attend class but cannot catch up with others. They are frustrated, upset, fear, want to quit school because they believe that they will never succeed. These students need professor\u2019s guidance and time to gain the confidence.
