I received an email where the writer wrote: \u201cNot all students need a college education. Not all college students are suited for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Even STEM may be what companies need, but it is not necessarily what students need. Stop promoting STEM \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: I do not want to answer by personal email, so I wrote this \u201copen letter\u201d to people who do not like my view on STEM:<\/p>\n
\u201cI agree with you that NOT all students should go to college, many may want to go to vocational school, or find a job after high school. We need workers to work in manufacturing assembly lines, construction, factories, agriculture, etc. I also agree with you that NOT all college students should select scientific or technical career. We need graduates in arts, drama, music, social science, architecture, and interior decoration, etc. College students have a choice to select what they want to study. In this blog, I write about STEM, education, technology trends and what is happening in the world for people who are interested in these subjects and to share with students to help them making decision on their education.<\/p>\n
There are students who go to college without a clear direction or education goals. There are students who do not know why they go to college. There are students who do not know what to study, or even what to do with their lives, and they need guidance. As a professor, I see this problem in every country, but it is getting worst in recent years with the high number of unemployed college graduates. Many students told me that if they know more about the job market and industry demand when go to college, they probably would change their fields of study or taking a more efforts in studying.<\/p>\n
The blog is my personal view on technology and education where I share what I know with concerned people and hope that it will help them to know more about the current trend in education and technology. My goal is to help college student to make the right decision because every student deserve an opportunity to improve their life. I also like to see in the near future; our country have a skilled generation to rebuild the economy and improve lives of our people.<\/p>\n
By involving and helping several education initiatives in many countries, I believe that all students can be successful and have good future if they study STEM in college. But to succeed, they need to prepare earlier in high school to build a strong foundation in math and science. Today with the advance of technology, college education is a necessity for a good career. The world \u2018s population is reaching over 5 billion people and continue growing, but talent remains a concern for every business and country\u2019s leaders around the world. The issue is not about the availability of workers but the shortage of critical skilled workers that can help to grow the economy. In the past twenty years, the global economy is fully connected and became a global market for highly skilled people and the competing for skilled workers has become a \u201chidden war\u201d among countries. A well-known economist said that\u00a0 \u201cIn the 21st century, countries that have more talents will control the world. In this \u201cwar for talent,\u201d the major weapon are not bombs or guns but education, especially STEM education.\u201d<\/p>\n
The nature of work, jobs, and careers is changing quickly because the advancement of science and technology. Most of the jobs in the next ten years will be different than today and most of the jobs today will disappear soon and be replaced by robots and automation. Countries that are relying on manufacturing and factories as the drivers for economic growth will have tough time to change and probably fall into chaotic societies. We already saw that happened in Africa and the Middle East where many countries were depending on natural resources and agriculture when the global needs changed, their economies collapsed, and they had a large number of unemployed people without jobs and hope in the future. A sociologist concluded: \u201cIt is easy to blame religious extremists and terrorism, but the cause of it is the high unemployment and the loss of hope among young people. Many become anti-social and angry at everything, and that will lead to the development of anarchists who want to destroy everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the jobs are changing due to the advancement of technology, the workers of the future will not be someone who work in the factories, supply chains or personnel administration but highly skilled people who can quickly adjust to changes in the job market.\u00a0 That means the critical skill that must be taught is the \u201clifelong learning\u201d and an \u201copen attitude\u201d to learn whatever come. Today Science and Technology are reshaping employment and the nature of work so fast, and they left a lot of people behind. Many people are losing the race against the speed of change, and that is creating problems to countries that are not changing quick in their education systems. Knowing this is happening now, what are we going to do? Can we just wait until something happens or taking action to reduce the risk? I believe this is not the time to debate about should we focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in our school or not? But when can we having a STEM program in all of the curriculum, from elementary to college, so our students can make a decision on what to learn?<\/p>\n
