Today some students go to school just to get a degree instead of developing their knowledge and skills. Even they know that the degree is not a guarantee for the job, but many take the attitude of \u201cwait until thing happens\u201d rather than focus on finding a solution before thing happens. As long as their family is still taking care of them, they do not worry. As long as they still have a place to go to and foods to eat, they do not worry.<\/p>\n
However for students who want a better future, I would advise them to think of themselves as a professional and decide which field of study is the best to increase their chance of getting a job. They must develop certain knowledge and skills that they can offer to the hiring company which allows them to distinguish themselves from others. They must develop a lifelong learning habit as a necessary step to keep their job and grow in their career over time.<\/p>\n
Today, most students are looking in the local job market, but with globalization, they should also think about the global market. It is possible that with the right knowledge and skills, they can work in other countries too. Due to the shortage of skilled workers, many countries are now an open door for skilled people to immigrate and work there. The U.S. allows about 80,000 skilled people to come in and work each year. European countries also \u201cimport\u201d several hundred thousand skilled workers, mostly technology workers each year. Once they learn more about the global market and the need, they should be able to prepare and plan their career accordingly.<\/p>\n
As a professional, they must have the expertise, so they need to keep up with the news, especially on things that relate to their field and continue to update their skills within their area of expertise. They will need to pay attention to what is happening in the industry to determine the trend and the needs. If there is a new skill or new technology in the industry they are interested in, they need to learn it as quickly as possible. Today it is easy to learn new skills in Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) because having these skills will differentiate between them and other candidates who are also applying for a job. Once they develop skills that are needed on the market, they will be able to get a job easily.<\/p>\n
I always ask my students to develop a career plan but after graduate, many abandon it as they are too busy with work, and that is a mistake. When they are working for some years, there is not much for them to learn in their job, so they need a career plan to guide them to move up. I always told my students: \u201cYou must ask yourselves, what skills do I need to learn to get promoted to the next level in the company?\u201d One of my advice for working people is to use their spare time to learn new thing that helps advance their career; then they will be ahead of others. This can be as simple as reading technical blogs or website about 10-20 minutes every day to improve their knowledge or taking one MOOCs class every year to develop new skills. As long as they have the lifelong learning habit, they will never have to worry about their future.<\/p>\n
