The shortage of workers in Canada<\/p>\n
The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) of Canada released the research paper last week warning that there is a severe shortage of technology workers in the country, and if nothing is done, the country will be at a serious economic disadvantage.<\/p>\n
The research paper found that there will be at least 200,000 technology jobs offer next year, but there are not enough workers to fill. Currently, Canada has over a million people working in technology jobs; these are high-paying and stable jobs but despite the potential for a high-paying career, not enough Canadians are pursuing an education in technology-related fields. According to the study, of the two million Canadians enrolled in universities across Canada, only six percent are enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs that will help them to work in the technology sector.<\/p>\n
The ICTC is calling on the federal government to take a leadership role in creating a national plan to prepare students for careers in the technology sector. The paper recommended that the government should make computer science mandatory for children beginning in Kindergarten. Recent studies suggest that students are less likely to continue in computer science courses as they age, introducing them to these courses earlier and continuing them throughout grade school and secondary school as part of a regular curriculum could help to maintain interest in more students.<\/p>\n
According to the government\u2019s report, Canada\u2019s expanding economy needs skilled workers to fill hundred thousands of Canadian job openings. Most of these jobs are in the STEM-related careers. To maintain its economy in the right direction, the government has been seeking qualified skilled foreign workers from overseas and has created various Canadian immigration programs to attract them. For example, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) offers a Permanent Resident Visa to Canada to qualified foreign nationals who have a university degree in aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, software engineering, computer science, information system management, and petroleum engineers. Many of these high-demand jobs in Canada pay well and offer excellent benefits.<\/p>\n
The idea is not new. All over the world, many governments have recognized that science and technology are the keys to economic growth and to solve the worker shortage; many have issued special immigration policies. For example, the United Kingdom have an open immigration policy for foreign nationals who have a university degree in STEM areas. Germany and Scandinavia countries have accepted several thousand of technology foreigners each year. The U.S. also have special visas for foreign students who study STEM at U.S. universities to stay and work.<\/p>\n
Today technology impacts everything and changes many things. The 21st century requires every person to have a wide range of abilities and competencies to do well in the fast changing environment. One of the abilities is to use technology such as computer or smartphone to search the internet, reading online newspapers, and participating in virtual classrooms. As in the past, people must know how to read and write; today they must know how to use technology because we are already in the Information Age.<\/p>\n
