Answer: Traditional lecturing method is focusing on the TEACHERS\u00a0 and how to teach the materials to the students. Active learning is focusing on the STUDENTS and how they learn the materials. To teach an Active Learning class requires the teachers to start with the desired results of what the students will learn. In other words, the teachers should know what they want students to learn.<\/p>\n
To do that, the teacher must establish the learning goals for the course.\u00a0 What do you want students to learn and be able to do after taking the class? What students should read to broaden their knowledge?\u00a0 What skills students must develop?\u00a0 What facts, concepts, and principles they should know?\u00a0 What processes they should follow? What are the important things that students should retain after completing the course? By answering these questions, you can design the course materials.<\/p>\n
Having designed the overall course materials, you can organize them in more detailed tasks. You should develop weekly reading materials, lecturing materials, exercises, tests, quizzes, questions, class topics for discussion, debate materials for students\u2019 learning activities. You will need to consider the following: How can they apply what they learn to develop the skills you want them to have?\u00a0 What exercises they need to understand the materials, not just memorize them. By organizing the course materials into weekly tasks, you can plan on how to teach them.<\/p>\n
After having the course design and weekly plans, you should verify that students are learning the knowledge that you want them to gain.\u00a0 You need evidence to ensure that students are making progress toward the learning goals of the course.\u00a0 By analyzing test results, quizzes, homework, etc. you can ensure that they are learning the materials that you want them to gain. For example, if you want students to develop problem-solving skills, you can give them problems to solve and ask them to write out each step that they take to solve the problem, as well as an explanation of why they do that, instead of just provide the right answer.<\/p>\n
Active learning class focuses on how to engage students individually and collectively. In the typical class where the teacher asks and one student answers, most of the class does not have an active learning experience. But if the teacher asks, the whole class begins to discuss with each other then each group presents the answer which leads into more discussions and debates then many students are actively engaged in the actual learning. As a teacher, you can measure the progress by seeing how many students are participating in class discussions, how many class presentations are given? You can always call some students by name if they are not participating or ask certain students to give a presentation in class to make sure that they are learning actively.<\/p>\n
In Active Learning class, students must read materials before coming to class. To make sure that they read the materials, I often give a short quiz based on reading materials at the beginning of each class. Each quiz worths 10 points and counts toward the final grade.<\/p>\n
In Active Learning class, attendance is required. Students cannot learn if they are not present. I often give 10 points to students who are attending class; these points are counted toward the final grade to discourage students from skipping class. Having attending class is not about just being there, but they must listen, processing course materials, responding to questions, and participating in class discussions. By given points to students who participate; who answer questions; who work hard to solve problems, you are creating a new learning environment where students are actively learning and eventually, you will see the wonderful learning results begins to take place.<\/p>\n
