We are living in a time where science and technology impact everything and innovations are the keys to economic prosperity. \u00a0The best way to take advantage of innovation is to have a proper and effective education system. Unfortunately, most education systems change very slow, resulting in some countries will miss the opportunities to improve their economy. In this globalized world, the role of the education leaders is becoming more important because their vision and leadership will determine whether the education system will make progress or not, thus indirectly impact the prosperity of the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n
There is an urgent need to develop these education leaders, especially in college and university level. Developing this type of leadership is a major challenge because the new leaders must have a clear vision of what their education system will be in the future. Traditionally, university leaders are trained in education management which involves hiring faculties, control finance, and other academic activities but not in global issues and technology impact. Most university leaders often select their replacement from the senior faculty to ensure it continues in the same direction rather than a new vision. This approach only works in a stable environment when change is minimum, but in the fast changing time of technology, it is not likely to be successful.<\/p>\n
Today the world is \u201cflat and connected\u201d, every country is facing fierce competition. If not changing fast, it will put a country at a disadvantage economically. As unemployment is rising fast, especially among young college graduates, there is an urgent need to provide them with a proper education in their fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to meet the global needs and improve the economy. A successful STEM education provides students with the skills that can be used to build a new economy based on technology. A proper STEM education can develop critical thinkers and the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators. Innovation leads to new products and processes that grow the economy. According to several government studies, it is clear that most jobs of the future will require knowledge of science and technology and all the fastest growing jobs for the next fifty years require significant STEM skills. It is critical for education leaders to make STEM education a top priority<\/p>\n
In this globally competitive\u00a0environment, every education system needs a new type of leadership as the leaders must be ready to make a difference in the long-term future, not just in a few years. They must have a strong desire for establishing changes to meet both global and local needs. The new leader must be able to communicate to faculties about the new vision. For example, every student should learn about science and technology and their impact so they can learn how to be problem solvers and innovators. Education must help them to develop certain skills that go beyond the academic classroom to apply in the industries and businesses.<\/p>\n
Of course, changes will not happen overnight as the goal is to build a new education for the future generations. But we need to start now to develop a new generation of students trained in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to develop the next innovators and encourage millions of students to pursue careers in these needed fields.<\/p>\n
