As the global economy is becoming more competitive, companies are more selective about hiring people.<\/p>\n

Today companies have more job applicants to choose from so they are trying to get the best people possible. Because companies define how many people they want to hire and the skill requirements for the job, they can select who they want to hire, especially when there are many qualified job applicants.<\/p>\n

Today college graduates have to compete with many experienced people and the competition is based mostly on skills NOT degree. The only exception in this competitive job market is if you are graduating in the field where there is a shortage such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). It is important for all college students to understand this fact when choosing a field to study. If you graduate in an area that there is fewer demand than you will have to compete with thousand graduates like you who also apply for same job and only few may get jobs.<\/p>\n

Today there are many college graduates who cannot find jobs and many companies that cannot find qualified people. The reason is many graduates do not have the skills that the industry is looking for. Not long ago, companies are willing to hire newly graduates and train them for the job they need. However since many of them switched jobs after got the training to get better salary, companies stopped the internal training and only hired qualified and experienced people.<\/p>\n

Today companies require exactly the skills that match their needs so finding job is much more difficult. That is why besides selecting a field of study that is in high demand; students also need to select universities that have the most updated training programs that industry needs.<\/p>\n

Today companies cannot find the people they want to hire because many universities are failing to improve their training programs so their graduates do not have the right skills. If you look at the industry and the job that companies listed, you will see their lists consists of many skills that are not taught in many universities. What companies prefer are the skills that workers learn by actually doing the job itself not from reading books or memorize few theories. A capstone project is one of the most critical factors in determining who will get the job. As students, you may need to look at training programs that are practical, having the most up to date materials, and having a capstone project where students practice what they have learned to develop skills.<\/p>\n

Today companies prefer to hire experienced workers because they have everything that companies want. They have experience doing the work; they do not need training. Beside the skills, there is another issue with some younger workers. According to several industry reports, many graduates do not have the right attitude, many are not conscientious, they do not want to work hard but only motivate by money so companies are not looking for younger workers anymore. They prefer workers with experience of two to five years of experience. They also do not hire people who are currently unemployed as these people are considered not \u201cgood enough\u201d as they want somebody who are currently working. The fact is that companies do not wants to train new graduates anymore put a lot of pressures on both students and schools. Students must select the right fields to study AND the right schools that have the best training programs that industry needs.<\/p>\n

Today most jobs require some knowledge of technology. If you look at all the jobs listed in the job market, you will find 90% of them require some knowledge of information technology. If you look further, you will see there are jobs that are growing and some are shrinking, there are high-paying jobs that are increasing in demand, and there are low-paying jobs that are decreasing in demand and eventually will be eliminated or replaced by robots and automation. This change is happening all over the world as with technology, workers could work from anywhere and not limited by national boundary anymore. According to a new industry about 45% of the job in U.S and Western Europe are done by workers in India, China, and Eastern Europe so knowing a foreign language is not something nice to have but a \u201cmust have\u201d for all students.<\/p>\n

Today Personal Computer (PC) is popular but thing is changing fast. In few more years, you may not see a PC on every desk but you will see more smart phones and tablets instead. It is hard to imagine that but as technology is changing you must change with that or else you will be left behind. If universities trainings do not change, their students will suffer. It is important to all students to look closely at the training programs when selecting university to attend. The reason many graduates cannot find work because schools are not teaching them the skills they need to survive in this competitive world as their administrators and professors are too busy with other activities and not paying enough attention to what happen outside of their environment.<\/p>\n

Today, a college degree is no longer a guarantee for a job. If you do not study hard, if you are not serious about learning but just passing classes to get a degree, you may be looking at a very bleak future as there are thousands of graduates with better skills competing for a fewer jobs. Even you have good skills but you also need to constantly learning new things because your skills will become obsolete in few years. You will be pushed out by younger and better skilled graduates, so you must know how to get your skills up to date by develop a lifelong learning attitude.<\/p>\n

Today many fields are changing fast and it is very difficult for business and economic students to get jobs without some knowledge of information technology. If you look in every financial sector, you will see that a majority of works are already being automated and most of the works require computing skills so it is important for business students to take few classes in computer programming and information system management instead.<\/p>\n

Today college graduates must be aggressive in searching for work. It is your responsibilities to make your education investment works for you rather than wait for something miracle happens or for the economy to get better because these things will NOT happen. There are NOT enough jobs for the number of people looking for them and the problem will remain for many years in the future because it is not your local economy or your local market but everything is dictated by the global economy. The way the whole world seems to work now is different from the past particularly in how automated things are. The best advice is you must have the right skills that companies need. If not, return to school and get a new skills rather than just sit and wait because thing is NOT the same anymore. We are living in a new world where everything is dictated by the whole world event. For every job opening, there are many people who want it and they do not came from the same place but everywhere. Your competitor is not your classmates or the people in the same country but they can be people from a neighbor countries or far away.
