It seems like only yesterday when I was listening to university professors say that they weren’t really sure what skills a data scientist needed, since the role was so new, nor what to teach them. That was three years ago or so. Since then, the role has been much better defined, though still evolving. Enough time has lapsed that now there’s even a scorecard for big data graduate programs. And here are the top 10 best<\/p>\n

Colleges, an independent online guide on the value to be had in undergraduate and graduate programs, made this scorecard based on the U.S. News & World Report ranking, PayScale’s 2015-2016 College Salary Report, and tuition cost as listed on each institution’s website.<\/p>\n

They ranked the top five best values in big data graduate programs for 2016 as:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stanford University in Stanford, California<\/p>\n

As I’ve pointed out before, your options in big data training are plentiful and diverse ranging from online courses, some of which are free, to residency accelerator programs, and formal training in higher learning institutions like those featured in this scorecard.<\/p>\n

If you decide to go for formal training, maybe this scorecard will help you in selecting a university. However, the need for data scientists today is so extreme that you’ll likely land a great job no matter where you got your training.<\/p>\n
