The global economy is growing fast, companies are making higher profits, and employment is increasing in the technology areas. Last year, Amazon hired over 80,000 workers and became one of the largest companies in the world. An industry analyst wrote: \u201cToday the pace of change is exploding exponentially. New technologies such as Social Media, Mobility, Big data Analytics, and Cloud Computing (SMAC) created a \u201cDigital Tsunami\u201d that impact everything and change the way companies do business. Companies must adapt to these changes or get out of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s data from the Internet, websites browsing, mobile phones, sensors, and social media can be collected, analyzed to create new insight information that allows companies to know what customers are doing, what they want, and predict what they will buy. Social media has provided companies new ways to reach customers faster, cheaper, and better. Mobile technologies have changed the way people communicate, shop, and work, not just locally but globally. Cloud computing provides a new way for companies to access information that they need to respond quickly to the changing markets. While each of these four technologies can work by itself, but when they are fully integrated into one business strategy, it will be a huge competitive force for the business.<\/p>\n
For example, Amazon is a good example of a company that knows how to take advantage of SMAC. Every time a customer access Amazon website, the data is collected. The company knows what the customer is looking for, what they are searching, what price they are comparing etc. The data is analyzed to build a profile of that customer for future marketing, advertising, and sales. Another company is Netflix. When a customer watches movies on Netflix website, they are asked to rate it, write reviews, or share their opinion with friends on Facebook or Twitter. Customer data is collected and analyzed so Netflix can make a personalized recommendation to each of their customers and their friends. By knowing what customers want and provide products and services that meet that needs, these two companies has competitive advantages over others. Today both companies are expanding their business to other countries, and wherever they go, they have achieved great success.<\/p>\n
However, many well-established companies are having trouble using SMAC technology. Most company owners are business people with limited knowledge of technology, and they do not understand how fast technology can change. Many of their managers do not want to make the decision for afraid of making a mistake. They prefer to wait for a clear direction from their executives and often miss the opportunities. Knowing SMAC technologies well, many startups have quickly captured the market and took customers away from these large companies. Smaller companies in different industries have found that SMAC technology is a new way to expand their business and compete in a market that used to be dominated by large companies.<\/p>\n
While some large companies are beginning to realize the power of SMAC technologies, most are too slow to apply them to meet the demands of the market. Some are busy with their traditional way of doing business and could not change their old thinking to adjust to today\u2019s market needs. A Wall Street analyst warned: \u201cIn the next five years, many large companies will not be able to compete and have to shut down. Many today\u2019s startups will grow larger and become the next giants of the industry. For example, Google is no longer a \u201cSearch engine\u201d company, it has expanded into biotechnology, self-driving car technology; mobile technology; robotics technology. Apple is not just a computer company but has expanded into music business; mobile technology; wearable devices and health technology.
