Writing blog<\/p>\n

A young friend asked me: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you write textbooks like other professors? Why do you write blogs, short articles for your students? A book would be more professional and more prestige than the short questions and answers style. If you want, I can introduce you to publishers who would like to have your textbooks.<\/p>\n

I explained: \u201cI have written four textbooks already. It took me about one and a half year to complete one book. It took the publisher another half year to have it published so by the time the book was ready it is already two year late. Today technology changes very fast, two years is a long time. In the U.S. most textbooks are expensive because things change fast so the life of a textbook usually lasted about three years than it can be obsolete. Publisher is in the business to make money so for textbook that only lasted three years they have to charge very high prices. I did not want students to pay high prices so I stopped writing textbooks. With the internet and website, I can write blogs and short articles that students can learn at no charge. Today most of my blogs and short articles have been translated to several languages. They are quite popular in China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Turkey since I also taught in those countries. In China, they are collected and published as a short textbooks and sell at very reasonable prices.<\/p>\n

There is a reason to keep it short and concise. There are several studies about how college students read textbooks but basically there are two types of students. The first type reads the book slowly, chapter by chapter, topic by topic and allows the material to be \u201cabsorbed\u201d in to their memories. The second type reads quickly; skip pages and chapters to go to the conclusion or summary part hoping that learning will happen \u201cmiraculously\u201d in their memories. Many college students today are the second type so their learning is not deep enough to consciously articulate the main ideas. Unfortunately, many professors who write textbooks want their books to be comprehensive with a lot of details and publishers also want the book to be as long as possible so they can make more money. The thicker the book, the more money they can sell. That will discourage students to read because it seems that the thicker the book, the more difficult the material. Most students already fear textbooks and expect materials to be difficult so they are not motivated to read a thick book. That is why I like to keep thing short and concise to encourage students to read. I try to write often to keep the materials current so students will have the most up to date.\u00a0 Of course, some of my friends said that they are not good enough to be a professional paper of a college professor, I do not write articles to be published in academic journal, these are blogs not research paper. My hope is to have more students to read and share information about what is happening in the technology world as they will need this information to plan for their careers, select what to study and broaden their knowledge in this information age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
