The global economy is accelerating because of technologies such as Social Media, Mobility, big data Analysis and Cloud computing (SMAC) that lead to high demand for technology workers. There is a critical shortage of graduates with these skills all over the world that students and their families should know so they can plan their career and select the right field of study that can help them to succeed.<\/p>\n
I often advise students not to make a decision on their field of study without good information about the future job market. But even in this Information Age, many students and their family are still making decisions based on information that is obsolete or based on the past trends rather than the future trends.<\/p>\n
Of course, it is easy to tell students to select their career based on what they like, what they are good at, and what is important to them. But how many young people know what they want in their career? How many college students plan their career early? How many of them can distinguish between a career and a job? Some students select field of study in college based on what they did well in high school. Being good at something in high school does not mean they will enjoy doing it in college or for the rest of their life. What they are good at in high school only help them to know what they like and do not like, but it may not help them in the future career. What they are good in high school may change when they go to college. What they like in high school may not be the same when they become adults.<\/p>\n
In this technology-driven world, the best fields of study are science and technology, but students often find these fields difficult. The reason is studying technology requires a different way of learning from other subjects. Students who are used to memorization, cram study, and passive learning will not learn technology well. Traditional education method is focusing mostly on the \u201cWhat\u201d but to study technology requires students to know the \u201cHow\u201d- how to study and how to apply what they have learned. For example, it would be difficult on how to use a computer for the first time if you do not have the computer in front of you. You cannot learn to write code just by reading books or listen to lectures. You must learn by doing it, by making mistakes, by learning from the mistakes before you can do it well. That is why \u201cLearning by Doing\u201d is a better method to teach science and technology. In this method, students will learn how to do thing by following a set of tasks, starting with something easy then gradually move up to more difficult tasks until they develop the skills. Students who miss or skip a task should be allowed to repeat it until they do it well; else they will not develop the needed skill to continue the learning. Without master the skill, they will confuse, frustrated and even quit.<\/p>\n
The current problem is many teachers are afraid that they cannot complete the curriculum if they allow more time for students to develop their skills. Many teachers hurry to complete all subjects in the textbooks rather than pay attention to students\u2019 learning. That is why many students feel that science and technology are too hard for them to learn and often give up.<\/p>\n
This problem\u00a0that should be addressed because teaching science and technology is very important in the 21st<\/sup>-century. Science and technology are the foundations of future innovations that may contribute to the economic growth as graduates in these fields always get good jobs. In this time of global economy, where competition is fierce, all countries need to have a skilled workforce in science and technology.
