A student asked: \u201cAre we in the Industrial Age or the Information Age? Why manufacturing is still the dominant sector in many countries. I do not see anything change yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: We\u00a0are already in the Information Age for more than a decade. It does not mean manufacturing will go away, but factories will use more Information technology to increase its efficiency.<\/p>\n
Due to the speed of technology innovation, many things will change at the exponential rather than a linear pace and disrupts everything, everybody, and every country. The first change of the Information Age is the invention of electronics devices such as the computer and its application. (i.e., personal computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones, etc.) The second change is the creation of the Internet that connects people all over the world and provides them with more information, news, and data. The change that is happening now is about artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, self-driving vehicles, 3-D printing, and then the next changes will be nanotechnology, biotechnology, and new materials science.<\/p>\n
You can see the impact of Information Technology in many places. For example, with a mobile phone, farmers can get weather data to help them to plant their crops accordingly. Farmers can demand higher prices because they can get market prices updated daily via text messages or on market websites. In the next few years, people will travel in self-driving cars where they can tell the car where to go then sit and read newspapers when the car drive itself to where they want to go. People can order many things online then it will come directly to their house via a drone. (i.e., Post office will probably be gone.) Soon, people do not need to see a Medical Doctor for a checkup because the clothes they wear will collect their blood pressure, heart rate, their sweat, and their daily activities, analyze them for any abnormality then sending information to the doctor. The doctor will contact them only if there are health problems.<\/p>\n
Today many factories are using robots to perform works, which is faster, better, more accurate and cheaper than human labors. Many offices are beginning to use automation processes to perform works for efficiency and higher productivity instead of hiring human workers. This technology advancement will change the way people live and work. The usage of robots will impact the manufacturing and office as they will become an integral part of these sectors. According to a report, robots could boost work productivity by 45% and reduce labor costs by 55%. The report predicts that in the next ten years, most manufacturing and office jobs will be replaced by robots, and there are few jobs for people.<\/p>\n
Many economists are worried that the Information technology will raise global inequality (The \u201cHave-skills\u201d and \u201cNo skills\u201d) among nations. As the demand for highly skilled workers is increasing while the demand for labor workers with less education, is decreasing, there will be an unbalanced global job market that impacts the entire global economy. Countries that gain the most benefit are advanced developed countries with strong technology-focused education systems. The victims are developing countries with poor planning, poor management, obsoleted education systems, who cannot compete against these advanced countries. As more \u201csmart machines\u201d are used to substitutes for labor workers across the world, there will be large-scale unemployment among labor workers with no future.<\/p>\n
Currently, there is a fearful sentiment among people that the advancement of technology will take their jobs away, and there is no future for their children. According to a new survey, the country that has the highest fear factor for technology advancement is China. In the past thirty years, China built its economy using the manufacturing model based on its cheap \u201cunskilled labors\u201d. Robotics and office automation could change many things and completely reverse everything that it has accomplished. A Chinese economist said: \u201cIf robots take all these jobs, it will create panic in our society, and our vibrant economy may collapse.\u201d Another economist warned: \u201cIt already happen where many foreign companies are leaving, and the economy begins to slow down. Without appropriate actions, everything we enjoy will be gone soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
In this fast changing Information Age, it is impossible to go against the trend. The only solution is to improve the education system quickly\u00a0by focusing more on Science, Technology Engineering, and Math (STEM) to catch up and compete.<\/p>\n
