Looking for job<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) three years ago but due to an illness in my family I decided to stay home to take care of my grandmother. Since last year, I started to look for work but could not find any. Even I had few interviews but these companies questioned my two years of absence as if I was lazy and did not want to work after graduation. I have explained to them about my situation but it seemed they did not believe me. How can I avoid this three years gap?”<\/p>\n

Answer: Looking for work after a lengthy absence is difficult. People wonder whether you are serious about work or not. Some may doubt whether you even have the current skills as you may not remember what you have learned in school few years ago. Today MBA is no longer a desirable degree anymore as the result of the financial crisis. There are many unemployed people with MBA degree and experience so you are in a very disadvantage position. It seems that you are actively looking for work and have few interviews but it would be tough as you have to compete with many people who also want a job.<\/p>\n

To improve your chance of getting a better job, you must show that you are serious, capable by pursuing a specific work in certain area. It means you must have something not many people have to remedial your long absence. My recommendation is to return to school, take a few courses in computer to rebuild your skills and focus on jobs in the software industry. A combination of technical skills and your MBA would give you a better chance to compete since this industry is still hiring. When the question about your two years of not working come up, you can defend by saying that you were enrolling in school to learn about computing work in addition to your business knowledge. It may resolve any potential concern a company may have had regarding your capabilities. Returning to school also demonstrates that you are not “Lazy” and that you can reengage aggressively at work.<\/p>\n

Taking on coursework in technical area is also a strength as you have both business knowledge and technical skills. With the changes in the Information technology industry, companies will value that strength as more companies are moving to cloud computing and automation, they need people with a combination of business and technical skills to deal with customers and suppliers.<\/p>\n

By returning to school, you could clearly explain why you were not working in the past two years after graduated. This includes being written on your resume by adding the number of technical courses that you have taken or even a new degree that you may have and it may change from a disadvantage to an advantage. An employer would be impressed that after finish a MBA, you return to school and get another degree in computer or learning additional skills that will distinguish you from others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
