New person on the job<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI just graduate with a degree in software engineering and get a job as developer in a software company. What advice would you give someone who starts the first job in a company?”<\/p>\n

Answer: The first few months in a new job is your opportunity to learn and to build your career. This is also the time when you show the company that they are making the right decision to hire you. No one would expect that you can be productive immediately but if you can learn as fast as you can and show how good you are as compare with other new hires, you could impress managers and get your career into the fast track.<\/p>\n

First, you must learn as much as possible about the business of the company as well as the organization structure. You must know who are the customers, who are the managers and people who can help you in your job.\u00a0 As a new employee, it is easier to ask questions during the first few weeks. You need to know about certain policies, standards, rules of the company but also the \u201cCulture\u201d or the \u201cunwritten rules\u201d in the company too. Every company has certain way to do work and sometime it is not written so pay attention to these detail. You also need to find out who the key influencers are and why they are influential; you need to observe and discover what is really important to the company.<\/p>\n

Second, you need to assess what skills you need to develop to meet the demand of the job and learn them as fast as you can to establish your credibility with others. Make sure that you understand your role and responsibilities and avoid stepping into someone else or overlooking your responsibility. This is the time to learn and be respectful to others so you can be part of the team. Every week you may need to check with your manager and team members to get feedbacks on how you are performing. Make sure that you understand what their expectations are and what are your goals to help you to set the right direction.<\/p>\n

Third, spend more time to know your new manager, your new teammates and others. This is the time to make friends not enemies. If need, ask for help since everybody would like to help new people.\u00a0 If you do not know how or where to get the information, ask your manager or teammates for help, do not try to do it by yourself as you may make mistake. Focus on what is important to the team and what you can do to help. If someone on your team does not respond well, do not take it personally because you may be in a role that someone else used to have.
