Answer: There is an increasing number of international students enroll in U.S universities so competition is fierce for top universities. My first advice is your son must apply to at least 10 to 20 schools to have a better chance of acceptance. Each school has website clearly explain the requirements so he must carefully investigate and follows the instructions to make sure that he completes the application on time. Most U.S. schools will close the admission at the end of the year and begin process the application in January or February so he must make sure that his application is complete and send in on time.<\/p>\n
Although many schools do not admit it but today due to overwhelming number of applicants, many schools are using \u201cspecial software\u201d to screen and eliminates unqualified applicants. It is important that you son has good academic credentials such as Grade Point Average (GPA) and good grades in the field of study that he selects. He must also have good scores on the admission test. (SAT for undergraduate, GRE or equivalent for graduate schools). Each school sets the minimum acceptable grades and the software will eliminate applications that fell below these standards. For example, if the minimum acceptable GPA is 3.0, any application that fell below 3.0 will automatically be rejected.<\/p>\n
Another key factor is the English language proficiency such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Each school also sets a minimum acceptable score and its software will reject applicants who have lower score. Although your son can take these tests several times to improve the score, my advice is do not take the TOEFL or IELTS more than three times. Even he may have good score but if he has taken four or more times, it usually means that he is not good enough in English to be accepted.<\/p>\n
If your son\u2019s application meets the general standard requirements (i.e., Good GPAs, good scores\u00a0on SAT, GRE or TOEFL), his application will be routed to the admission committee to review. His application will be evaluated with other similar applications to select the best candidates. The most important in the application review is the Statement of Purpose where applicants explain the reason why they want to go to a particular university and why they select the field of study. Since a group of professors or university personnel will review the application, it is often subjected to interpretation whether they like the writing on the Statement of Purpose or not. Of course, different schools have different views on how they select students. For example, some schools prefer the leadership qualities when others may pay more attention to technical excellence etc. However, the overall important factors are the logical reasons, that candidate wants to study in a particular school. A good candidate must be able to explain why he wants to go to that school? What he want to study and why he selects that field of study? What type of knowledge or experience that he has in that field? And what he wants to do with the degree once he has it?<\/p>\n
The admissions committees look for candidates with clear, well-defined interests about the school and the field of study. My advice is your son needs to spend time to research the school, read about the school\u2019s philosophy and missions so he can write a good statement that indicate his interests, why he wants to go to that school, his background that supports his view. It is important that he also has a clear career prospective on what he wants to do in his future. He has to back up what he put in his statement with supporting evidences such as his research, his academic achievements, his volunteer activities etc. Everything that he writes will allow the admission committee to learn more about him so they can distinguish him with other candidates.<\/p>\n
