The last day of class<\/p>\n
Each summer I travel to teach in countries outside the U.S. and my teaching method often raise interests, especially in Asia, where traditional lecturing method is still the only way to teach. Many teachers want to learn more about the Active learning method and most students tell me that they really like this new way of learning.<\/p>\n
On the first day of class, I always set the expectations for the course by explaining in detail what students must do to succeed in my class. To most students, this is the first time they learn about the Active learning method. It usually takes about a week for them to get familiar with this new way of learning. By asking them to read and prepare before coming to class is a new idea to them. I insist that I will not lecture but will answer questions that they have during their reading of the materials. I will ask many questions in class and if they do not read before the class, they will not pass the course. I also require students to work in team and participate in class discussion, as I give points to each activity that will count toward the total grade.<\/p>\n
I use the last day of class to review what students have learned to make sure that I meet the goals that I set for the course. Contrary to what students expect, there is no final exam in the last day of class since I have exam every week so there is no need to have a final exam at the end. To most students, not having final exam is a great relief because they do not have to cram for the exam. However, I use the last day of class as a complement to the first day of class.<\/p>\n
On the first day, I ask students to fill out a list of expectations on what they want to learn in this class. I compare their expectations with my own expectations to make sure that they are similar. If there are differences, I will discuss with them so we all understand clearly, about what will happen in the class. I document all students\u2019 expectations then distribute to the class as a reminder of what they want to learn. In the last day of class, I ask students to compare what they have learned in the class to their expectations to determine if there is anything that do not meet their expectations. Students often surprise because this is the first time they are asked to evaluate the teacher. In addition to the review of expectations, I also ask students to provide recommendations for the course content so I can improve my materials in the future. I told them: \u201cFor active learning class, everything is interactive where both students and teachers are working and learning together.\u201d<\/p>\n
By allowing students to express what they have learned will give them a sense of accomplishment. It also gives teachers information about what need to improve. The last day of class is also an opportunity to complete something in a way that students will remember. This is the day that I share with them my expectation that often go beyond the technical aspects. During this time, students can share their views, asking general questions about their careers and other issues that they want to ask. I want students to learn something practical so they can apply to their jobs and contribute to their society. After all, they may not remember the course content but they will remember my advices and challenges. What I want students to learn are not just the technical aspects but also the knowledge that connects to higher goals of life. I want my students to lead an ethical career and productive lives so they can contribute to their society. I often say, \u201cWhat you have learned from this class will be obsolete in few years because technology will change. However, there are things that never change such as your responsibilities to your family, to your society, and to your country. These values are precious as they have lasted for thousand years so you should always remind yourselves to be a good citizen, ethical professionals and make your family proud of what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n
