Another “Brain drain” issue<\/p>\n
The weather in Beijing is hot in June, the pollution is getting worst and almost every people is wearing face mask to prevent breathing pollutants. Although I like to walk after class like when I was at Carnegie Mellon but in this weather, I have to find an air-conditioned restaurant to discuss about education with several professors here.<\/p>\n
A professor starts: \u201cWe have lost our best graduates to better-paying jobs oversea, but now we are losing the best professors who taught them too. As the shortage of skilled technology workers continues, many top professors left their teaching jobs to work in technology industry where they can make more money. Some even left the country and found teaching job oversea that pay more.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another professor adds: \u201cTop universities often receive a lot of government supports so they can pay their professors well but universities in rural areas cannot pay their professors enough for them to make a living. Most have to earn extra money from tutorial services but with the fast changing economy, many are unable to survive. Since professors in big cities can make three or four times the salary of professors in a rural areas, when there are vacant positions, professors from rural areas will move to big cities and left their schools with fewer professors. The result is devastating as many students in rural areas do not receive proper education. They do graduate but have no skills and could not find jobs. The biggest challenge for our education system is how to improve quality in rural schools and stop the high unemployment among students from these schools.\u201d<\/p>\n
A professor explains: \u201cIn the past few years, hundreds of professors have left their jobs, and the pace is accelerating. Fifty years ago, being a professor is a prestigious job but now it is no longer being respected as having money is more important. If you look around, you can see many students go to school in their car but professors go to work by bicycle or by bus. As society changes, many people are getting richer and cost of living is increasing but teaching salary is still remain the same. That is why hundreds of professors who taught at top universities have quit their job. Some taking better-paying jobs in the industry here while others have found teaching positions at universities abroad. The \u201cBrain drain\u201d of teachers will create big problem as it lowers the quality of teaching which resulting in lower the skills of our graduates. Without current skills, most could not find jobs and unemployment among college students is reaching several million a year. Few years ago, students who studied abroad often returned home to teach. Now, those who leave the country to pursue better education or advanced degrees rarely come back. We will suffer this bad consequence for many generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
I ask: \u201cBut all the news state that your education is improving fast and some schools have achieved top level \u2026\u201d A professor laughed: \u201cYes, we are improving in few top universities where government put a lot of money in to support them. But we also have several thousand universities and many million students, and those schools are not so good if not getting worst. Today most professors say they cannot make it on the small salaries the government offers. They are tired of the neglect that affects our education system so they leave for better jobs elsewhere and left the teaching to remaining professors who have to deal with all the issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
A professor concluded: \u201cEverybody agree that education is important but no one would do anything about it. Many professors are demoralized and students are frustrated as they see the number of unemployed graduates keep increasing. Universities are place to train future leaders, future managers, future engineers, future entrepreneurs but they have fewer qualified professors. How can we encourage future generation to become educators to build our country? Today our economy is growing fast due to foreign investment so many have an illusion that we are growing strong. The fact is without our own strengths from our own people, we are still a developing country.\u201d<\/p>\n
