A student wrote to me: \u201cI am preparing to study in the U.S. but still undecided about private or public university. My father said private school is better but many people told me that there is no difference. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: There are differences between public and private universities. The main difference is how they are funded, as it affects the tuition prices. Most public universities are funded by governments for the cost of operating universities so the tuition is lower. Private universities do not receive funds from government but rely on mostly on tuition and private contributions so the tuition is higher. Another difference is the size of the school. Private universities are often smaller than public universities and their classes are also much smaller (Typically 25 to 45 students per class). Public universities are much bigger and their classes are often larger (typically 25 to 200 students per class, depending on the subject). Public universities offer many fields of study as they must accommodate a broad education for the public so students have many choices. Private universities offer a limited fields of study, and often have particular specialization and focus. Some private universities specialize in arts and social science when others focus on science and engineering. (This is an important factor as you must select the right university that specialize in the field of study that you want.)<\/p>\n
There is a myth that private universities are for rich people who can afford it. It is not true, as most private universities do have generous scholarships to excellent students who need help financially. However, many private universities are known for their education excellence and often very selective (Among ten best universities in the U.S., 9 are privates.) Top private universities often have large endowment funds due to their close relationship with the industry as well as generous contributions from successful company owners and entrepreneurs who graduated there. For example, Gordon Moore (Created Moore\u2019s law) and found Intel, donated $500 million dollars to California Institute of Technology. William Hewlett who found Hewlett Packard, also donated $500 million to Stanford University. By having a lot of money, some private universities can afford to hire the best professors, provide them with modern research laboratories, develop the best training programs and attract the best students to study there.<\/p>\n
If you want to go to university in the U.S., you should identify your education goals and your field of study. You need to consider the tuition costs, class size, training programs that match your selected field of study BEFORE selecting the school. Of course, you must get accepted there so choosing between a public or private school depends on what you want to get from the education there.<\/p>\n
