The problem of cheating<\/p>\n
I just read from The Wall Street Journal and several U.S. newspapers that last year (2014) over 8000 Chinese students were expelled from U.S. universities due to cheating on exams. For many years, the image of Chinese students who study in the U.S. was positive as most were studious but according to the article, the image of them has changed completely in the past five years as many new coming students were academically inferior and often cheat on exams. According to the article, as China\u2019s economic has grown more prosperous, it allowed more Chinese family to send their children to study abroad. But the attitude of these students were not the same as previous generation who were the best students to get scholarships to study abroad as many came from wealthy families who pay their own money to study oversea and many have no motivation to study. These students were not prepared to meet the challenge of the U.S. education so they turned to cheating or hiring other students to do works for them and some got caught and expelled.<\/p>\n
In response to the article, the Chinese government\u2019s newspaper, the Guangming Daily said that with hundred thousands of Chinese students study in the U.S. but only few thousands were expelled was not a cause for concern. It also added that this was an issue not just in the U.S. but happened in Europe too because cheating was a major issue in Chinese education system as passing exams and getting degree are still the goals. The newspapers also admitted that cheating is common in their own universities with many students cheat or paying others to take tests for them.<\/p>\n
Last year a professor at Harvard noticed similarities in many students’ final papers and discovered that over hundred students, nearly half of his entire class had been cheating. If students at Harvard the most prestigious school were cheating in large numbers then it is no surprised that it also happens on every university and everywhere. According to an university study, about 75 percent of college students admit to cheating to improve their grades. With an increasingly competitive and fewer job opportunities, cheating has become a disease that spread rapidly across the world.<\/p>\n
Many professors told me that they prevent cheating during exam by having their students sit in odd row of seat, leaving an empty seat between each student so they cannot look at other\u2019s work or forbid students to bring smartphones, MP3 players during the exam. However, I use different technique by allowing to students to retake the exam if they did not do well in the first time. During the test, if students cannot answer the questions, they can mark the question with the sign \u201cSC\u201d (Second chance) then copy the questions on a piece of paper. After the test, they can take that paper home and look up the correct answers. The next day, they have to come in and redo the questions that they did not know so I can grade both their original tests and their make-up tests at the same time. If students missed the question on the first test but answered it correctly on the make-up test, then they received half of the grade. For example, if there are ten questions on the test, a student has five correct answers will receive five points. However, if he has all five wrong answers corrected in the make-up test, then he will receive two and a half points. The final grade would be seven and a half points. By using this technique, I rarely have problem with cheating in my class.<\/p>\n
My view is I want students to learn and they will learn more by study again if they do not know the materials well. In this technique, they have to go back and learn the things that they do not know. Most students told me that by having a second chance, they felt less stressful during exam and comfortable as they learned from their own mistakes. During the test, they have to think about each question seriously to determine the answer and decide whether or not they really know the answer or asked for second chance. They will know whether their way of study is effective or not so they can improve it. To be fair with other students in class, these \u201csecond chance\u201d students only receive half of the point from not knowing the answer during the test. They have a short time (24 hours) to learn the correct answers that means they have to do extra study. As a teacher, I care about how much they learn and how well they learn. If they do not learn well, they have to study again until they really know it well. Of course, my test is not about memorization so they can look up the answer easily but I design the test to require deeply thinking so students must know the concept well in order to answer them.<\/p>\n
I do not think that this technique can eliminate the problem of cheating. But for over twenty five years of teaching, I rarely have problem with students cheat in my course. Students told me that they like this technique, not because they can pass the test but because it encourages them to learn more, knowing that they do have a \u201csecond chance\u201d in case they do not understand something well. I tell my students: \u201cIf you do not learn well, you can learn them again. I expect honesty and integrity in my class, cheating and dishonesty is not acceptable. If you cheat in college, you will cheat in your life. If you cheat your teacher, you will cheat your parents, your husband or wife, and then others. If you cheat now, you will cheat in the future. And if many of you cheat, what would your society become in the future? Let\u2019s put a stop to this unacceptable behavior now so we do not have to worry about it in the future. You have a \u201csecond chance\u201d to learn something that you do not learn well, take advantage of that by being honest with your teacher. If you learn to be honest now, you will lead an honesty life and benefit everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
