How to make students want to learn<\/p>\n
A young Asian teacher lamented: \u201cToday students do not want to learn anything. All they want is to pass tests then get the degree. That is why we have many unemployed college graduates here and it is getting worst.\u201d I told him: \u201cOur job, as teachers, is to convince students who do not want to learn to start learning.\u201d He laughed: \u201cIt is easy for you to say because you are teaching in the U.S. where skills are important. But in my country, most students only want the degree as they believe it will help them to get job. Some even buy fake degree to get job instead of going to school.\u201d<\/p>\n
I told him: \u201cIt is easy to blame the students but I think the real causes are the traditional education system that put high value on degree instead of skills and the old teaching method that discourages learning. In this education system, teachers often threaten students that if they do not study, they will have bad grades or fail exams. Grades and exams serve as the threatening tools to force students to study. Since their family will be angry if they have low grades or failing exams, students must study hard. However, have you ever asked: \u201cAre those students really learning something or they only want to do just enough to avoid their parents\u2019 anger? The problem with threatening students is that in order for them to study, you have to continue to threaten them. As soon as the threat stops, they also stop learning. And overtime some students get used to it and no longer afraid then the whole learning falls apart. Basically you can threaten them when they are young but you cannot threaten them when they are adults.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMost students know about unemployment among college graduates but they do not know how to avoid it. They understand that the degree is no longer a guarantee for job but when they look at people in certain positions, they all see that these people possess certain degree even it has nothing to do with their positions. For example, a business manager with a Ph.D degree in literature printed in his business card or a salesman of insurance with a Master degree in history clearly display in his website. Of course, it does not make sense but as long as the degree is still considered important then people will try to get it, regardless whether they get it by going to school or buy a fake degree. As long as companies are still hiring people based on the degree rather than focus on selecting people with proper education and skills, then the degree is still a problem that cannot be solved. To avoid the \u201cjust passing exam and get degree\u201d issue, do we still want to threaten them? Threatening only bring fear and encourage students try to pass exams without learning anything. Some may cheat to pass exam or pay to get degree so it really does not work.<\/p>\n
To encourage students to learn, it is important to answer the fundamental question: \u201cWhy do they need to be educated?\u201d It is important for teachers to spend time at the beginning of the school year to explain the \u201cBig picture\u201d of globalization, the global economy, and competition among countries as the world is getting connected etc. Once students understand that they must have certain knowledge and skills to survive today\u2019s economy then they will begin to think more about learning. They need to understand the fact that labor works are disappearing quickly due to automation and robotics technology. They need to understand that they will have to compete for jobs with graduates from other countries as jobs can be moved from one place to another easily. They need to understand that they can work for any company from any place if they have the skills that the company needs. They need to understand that a proper college education is the key to survive in this \u201cInformation Age\u201d. They need to know about changes that are happening all over the world. Basically, they must clearly understand why they need to be educated. Once students are convinced that they must learn certain skills then the next step is to make sure that all training materials must be relevant to their needs and the teaching method will have to change to accommodate this need. Only then, students will want to learn and our job is to provide them the best education possible.<\/p>\n
