A teacher wrote to me: \u201cI teach history, not information technology. But I like the active learning approach, how do I design my history course using the active learning method? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: The active learning method can be used in any subject, not just information technology. The course design is relatively simple for any teachers in any subject. First, you need to establish your learning goals on what do you want students to learn and be able to do? For example, in history course, you want them to know certain historical events and people associate with those events so they should know some facts. But you also want to go beyond the facts as you want students to be able to learn from those history lessons so they can develop certain opinions that can be applied to current situations or make decision. As teachers you need to ask yourself what you want students to know, what they need to read, what they need to hear from you, what they need to explore additional information to they can develop knowledge about certain events. Then you can ask yourself if they know these facts, what concepts or views should they develop? What kind of views or ideas they should retain? These are things that you want students to remember after they have completed your course. By having answers to these questions, you will be able to build your course, and develop the learning goals for your students.<\/p>\n
After having the learning goals, you must ask yourself how you assess their knowledge to ensure that they have learned what you want them to learn. What kind of evidence that prove to you that they have learned? In other word, what type of test questions, homework assignments, or paper to write etc. that you need to develop to ensure that students have learned what you want them to know? For example, if one of your learning goals is understand how World War 2 started, you can ask students to write a paper and explain to you about the causes of World War 2. Have them write out all events that lead to World War 2 and an explanation of why they think these are the reasons, instead of just citing some facts from textbooks.<\/p>\n
After you have decided what type of tests or homeworks you want to assess students\u2019 learning, then you start organize materials that you want to teach. You should not develop a long lecture but focus on number of questions that you want to ask and students must discuss in class to improve their knowledge and learning activities.\u00a0 What are the best questions you could challenge students to develop to meet your learning goals? How can they develop their own opinions using this knowledge? What type of critical thinking they must develop when learning from historical events? You want to develop some collaborative exercises that encourage students to go deeply into historical events in order to comprehend them. You want to foster in-depth understanding, not rote memorization. To learn history is not about knowing what happened but also why and how these events happened. That is what active learning really is.<\/p>\n
