Issues with teaching<\/p>\n
When you begin to work as teachers, you are enthusiast about teaching and helping students with your knowledge. But after ten or fifteen years, you may reach a time where everything is just routine, your enthusiast is gone, your motivation is no longer there, and you have other personal things that demand more attention than just teaching. This is a serious issue with some education systems but few people pay attention.<\/p>\n
Last summer when teaching in Asia, a professor asked me how long have I been teaching and he was surprised that I have taught for more than twenty five years. He commented: \u201cI do not know how you get the energy. I also taught for twenty years, I have achieved certain status in the university then suddenly everything is just dull routine. The same courses are taught with the same thing year after year. Students are still asking the same questions and follow the same way to learn. You may think that each year is different, but after ten years of teaching, they are not much different. I am comfortable to teach all courses without preparation because they are just routines. I am worry that I no longer be the good teacher that I used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
We had several long conversations where other professors joined in and shared their same frustrations. I found that in many Asian countries, professors teach the same number of courses year after year and rarely change anything. Some get promoted to other positions such as school administrators but most remain as teachers for the rest of their career. Once the teachers are comfortable with their materials such as guidance, activities and assignments, teaching become an easy task. Each year they have new students so they can repeat the same thing, everybody is content and nobody has any reason to change. Of course, many are tired gradually and their teaching erodes classroom learning for students. When the materials are the same, year after year, many teachers set priority on other personal things and decrease the energy devoted to teaching. Eventually all the enthusiastic and motivation are gone. All the effective caring vanishes. What is left is just a routine job like any other jobs and nothing else. In Asia, academic teaching career receives high respect in society but the positions are not paid well so many teachers have to earn extra income from other sources. The most common is to open tutorial services for students as passing exams is important there. But even with this extra teaching, many told me that they are tired of teaching.<\/p>\n
I explained to them that in the U.S. especially in top universities, professors must change their course materials every few years. They must continue to update and learn new things to keep up with changes. As science and technology are changing fast, I have to update my course materials every year. In the summer, most of us are taking additional trainings to learn new things to improve our course materials. Because we are teaching new courses, we always have to prepare new guidelines, new activities, and new instructional assignments for students so we are very busy during the summer. At the beginning of the school year, we are ready and motivated to start our new materials with new students. Teaching is also learning and we want to know how well we know the new materials and how well we are doing our job. Because teaching materials are always new and challenging, we rarely getting into the \u201ccomfortable attitude,\u201d like our colleagues in Asia. Every teachers must constantly learning and improving all the time because U.S. universities always update their trainings to prepare students for the demand of the industry.<\/p>\n
In contrast with Asian education systems, in the U.S. it is the students who evaluate teachers at the end of each course. The evaluation is conducted by an independent outside group to protect the integrity of the results. University\u2019s administrators use them to evaluate teachers\u2019 performance. As teachers we also know how well we are doing in our classes. Another key measurement is the outputs or how well students are doing after graduated as it is one of the key indicators to rank university. In the U.S. university ranking is very important. Top students want to go to top universities, and top companies consider hiring from top universities a priority. Besides hiring students, most funding from private companies always go to top universities because of their education excellent. The relationship between private companies and top universities has been established for years and it is still growing stronger with the market demand. Today private universities are holding about two third of the total education funding supports. Among the top are Harvard University ($42.8 billion) Stanford University ($31.6 billion), Yale University ($25.4 billion), and Princeton University ($21.3 billion), Massachusetts Institute of Technology ($15.2 billion). With more money, these schools can hire top faculty, invest in modern facilities, improve their trainings to meet the market needs and attract the best students. As I told my Asian colleagues, if they continue to update their materials by learning new things and using new teaching methods, the teaching will never become routine, and they will never become comfortable and students will benefits significantly from this teaching. We become teachers because we care and we are responsible to develop the next generation of knowledge people who will contribute to our society and make a difference in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
