This is quite contrast to the education system there where students only have two or three tests every semester and one big exam at the end of the school year. A professor asks: \u201cWhy weekly test? What have students learned in a week that must be tested?&#8221; I told him: \u201cActive learning method requires having frequent test to provide progress to the students. Most students do not know whether or not they really learned the materials or can apply the knowledge to solve problem. As teachers, we also do not know whether the students\u2019 really learn something or not? Or can they apply the content well or not. That is why I have weekly quiz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By provide feedback to the student regarding their progress on that week, students will understand how well they have learned the materials. It is an important that students know about their progress toward a skill to be developed. Active learning method allows the students to know where they are in the learning process, where they are going, and how much further they have to go until they really master the course materials. The concept that students can \u201csee\u201d their progress is important because in active learning, students are responsible for their learning. The active learning philosophy states that under appropriate instructional conditions, all students can learn what is taught. The method requires that classroom materials be organized into discrete units where complete mastery is required before moving to the next unit so students will not just learn something but must be able to apply it too. The active learning method considers the learning as a process or a journey where students learn one instruction materials to the next under the guidance and evaluation of the teachers. They do not go to the next unit until they really learn and are able to apply them accordingly. That is why a weekly quiz is needed to evaluate their learning progress.<\/p>\n<p>By design the course materials from easy to more difficult units, and let students to go from the one level to another will let them learn and apply skill to achieve the learning objectives. In the beginning students learn to solve problems with a lot of helps from teachers then as students becomes more adept at solving the problems, the teacher provides less and less guidance until students are independently solving problems by themselves. That is why active learning method is more suitable for STEM-based education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) because it focuses on developing skills to solve problems rather memorize facts like the traditional method. In other word, Active learning method is the process of managing the developing of skills that are beyond the students\u2019 capacity, so that they can focus on learning the skills within their capability. Once that a unit is learned, students move to another unit which builds upon the previous. For each unit, there is test to provide progress to the student and ensures that they have the skill. Weekly test also maintain students\u2019 interest in learning as they moves from level to level having different experiences and achieving success as they progress toward the course objectives.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the course, the last few tests are usually more difficult and challenging. Students must prove that they have both the knowledge and the skills to solve them. Basically, the final test would not be possible to solve without the experience and skills developed from the preceding levels. When students ask me: \u201cIs there a big exam at the end of the course?&#8221; I ask them: \u201cWhat exam? You already have ten to twelve tests and that constitute your final grade. You have proved to me that you know the materials well and have developed your skills. I do not need to test you with big exam anymore.
