The reasons for unemployed college graduates because they do not select the right fields of study, or attend the wrong schools that do not provide proper education, and often pursue a degree rather than develop the skills that the job market demands. Many students do not have enough information to plan for their career but go to college because their friends also go to college. Many parents are too busy and do not have time to investigate the school and the field of study that their children select. They may not pay attention to the supply and demand of the job market. They let their children go to any college without further investigation, without enough information, and without monitoring their children\u2019s learning.<\/p>\n
I believe a college education will offer your son better opportunities in life but there are things that you must do to help him to prepare. You must work with him to plan for his career by exploring several options to select the right fields of study. All over the world education systems are changing from academic-based of theories and philosophies to STEM based (science, technology, engineering and math) where the application of technology is important. There are hundreds of field of study that your son could select but he must set his education goals clearly on what he wants to do with his career. There is a misconception about the words \u201cCareer\u201d and \u201cJob\u201d as many people do not distinguish them, but they are two different things. A job is something people do in the short term to make money. It can be anything to get paid and a person can work many jobs in their lives. A career is a long-term pursuit of a lifelong ambition that often requires intensive education and training. Some careers may last a lifetime. Young people often have dreams, many are not realistic because they are not matured enough to understand the implications. For example, many want to be singers, actors, writers, or sport stars. The reality is that very few people succeed in those professions. You need to explain the difference between a career and a hobby. A hobby is an activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during leisure time. Anybody can sing if they like music but making money by being professional singer is difference.<\/p>\n
Traditionally, most parents believe that education is the responsibility of the school and teachers so they rarely get involved. However, this view is changing as today education is considered an investment that parents must be actively involved to support their children. It means parents must select where to invest (Help children to select the right school) and how to invest (Help children to select the right field of study) to make sure that they get the results that they want. As a father, you should have frequent conversations with your son about the importance of education to motivate him to develop the knowledge and skills instead of chasing after a \u201cpaper degree\u201d. If needed, you should meet with school\u2019s counselors and teachers to get necessary information to make sure that your son will go to the right schools and receive a proper education.<\/p>\n
A proper college education should teach students to think critically, to express their thoughts and opinions independently, and to review all options to make the right decisions based on facts and data. A proper college education should provide students with all the information as needed so they can explore them based on their own interests. Today critical thinking and knowledge about geography, history and economics and the use of technology are essential for students to understand what is happening in the world and their place in it so they can advance in society regardless of what field of study they are in.<\/p>\n
Today we are living in a global world where communication is critical. Beside fundamental skills such as reading and writing, students must also need to have additional skills in foreign language to succeed. They should think about job opportunities in the world market not just in local market because according to a new study, by 2025 more than 45% of workers will work for global companies that have offices all over the world. For college graduates, knowing a foreign language is no longer a luxury but necessity to succeed. Your son should select at least one foreign language and develop reading, writing and speaking skills as much as possible.<\/p>\n
I am sure your son will probably change his mind about what career to pursue as he is maturing as adult. That is normal but it is important for you as a father to share with your son what you like and dislike about your career and why you chose it. In the past, you may not have many choices but your son should have several options to choose, and it is a privilege that he must appreciate. You need to investigate by reading more about job opportunities so you can explain to your son about careers that he may not have considered.
