Throughout the years in college, students have many teachers but they only remember a few who inspire them to learn. What are the qualities of these memorable teachers? Why do students learn more from them than others? According to a survey of 5,000 college students, there are four qualities that distinguish these memorable teachers from others: knowledge, communication, relevancy, and caring.<\/p>\n
In the survey most students report that the number one quality of a memorable teacher is their knowledge of the subject. The fact is knowledge does not means only the \u201cknow how\u201d but also the \u201cknow why.\u201d When teachers are asked why they are teaching a subject, many answer: \u201cBecause it is required by the school.\u201d To know the subject well is not enough to encourage students to learn, teachers need to know the reasons why they are teaching it and why students need to know it. That will bring more exciting to the class and motivate students to learn. Socrates, the Greek philosopher said: \u201cEducation is not filling of a vessel but the kindling of a flame.\u201d Teachers are not just transferring their knowledge but also giving students the reason to learn by their enthusiast or their \u201cFire\u201d to teach the subject. When student asked me why do I teach programming languages? Effective communication is not only the use of words but also a set of skills including attentive listening, stay calm in the moment and the capacity to recognize the emotions of students during the conversation. For example, when facing a difficult question, some teachers would give students the answer instead of helping them come up with the answer by themselves. A memorable teacher will clearly explain the concepts, show students the techniques that needed to find the answer so students can come up with the answer by themselves. Some never pay attention about relevancy or how much materials have changed and if asked, they may threaten students with giving them bad grades. If the teachers do not care about what is being taught or how current it is then why should the students want to learn about something that are obsolete?<\/p>\n
The last factor that distinguishes memorable teachers from others is the caring for students. Being a memorable teacher is more than knowing the subject, communicate well, and keep materials relevance but also have a deep concern for students\u2019 future. Good teachers are willing to spend more time to help students to learn and provide them with proper guidance. To them, education is more than just theories and facts; education is much more than knowledge or applying the concepts; but also the development of moral characters and ethics. A skilled teachers will make sure that their students leave the universities with the knowledge and skills needed for their career AND good characters to be active citizens who will make a difference in the company where they work, in the place where they live, and in the society where they contribute.<\/p>\n

Trust is the first step to build good relationships between students and teachers and they will work harder to maintain it. When both teachers and students working together, it will create a positive classroom experience where everybody learn from others.
