Today technology is impacting almost every business and continues to evolve at a rapid pace. But with each technology change, new skills are needed to make the business more efficient and productive. Currently critical needs are the Internet of Things, Big Data, Computing Security, and Cloud Computing but there are not enough skilled workers to implement them as most universities are unable to adjust to these needs. This \u201cSkills gap” is getting more critical because businesses cannot take advantage of many technology opportunities available without skilled workers to implement them.<\/p>\n
Just as technology is constantly changing, so is the role of the universities as they must find ways to adapt and prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. University leaders need to understand that the world is changing, if they do not adjust their training fast enough, their students will be at a disadvantage. Today hardware is getting faster, software is becoming more complex, science is rapidly evolving and industry needs more skilled workers to solve the problems they are facing. Today education systems all over the world are adopting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as the foundations for their new training programs. If university leaders do not adopting STEM foundations, use new teaching methods, retrain faculty, and prepare students for this changing world, than they will fail their education goals and not meeting their society\u2019s expectation, and they will put their students at significant risk in this competitive job market. By setting new vision, focus on retraining of faculty and invest in STEM education, university leaders can ensure that their schools will produce skilled graduates to meet the society\u2019s needs and build new reputation for their school.<\/p>\n
The problem among universities is often their leaders come from faculty members. When professors become the university leaders because it is their turn, they often come in as managers rather than visionary leaders. Managers tend to keep thing stable so the school may not making much progress. Being a visionary leader means setting new goals and new direction for the university to leap forward even it may be unpopular. Setting new goals requires open communication with all faculties to let them know why and how changes are needed. Even faculty may not agree but they will understand that changes are needed and there are priorities that must be done. By focus on a few key things and make them happen, leaders will get the necessary help from faculty to move toward the new vision.<\/p>\n
To do that, visionary leaders should look beyond the current situation to take a future-oriented view. They should focus on where the university should be and how to get there. They should focus on how education can impact society and helps improve the economy. They should focus on updating archaic training programs with new STEM based curriculum to raise visibility of the school. They should focus on retrain faculty, bring in more students, and develop the school reputation as progressive ones. They should invite more guest lecturers from industries; collaborate with other global universities to provide new perspectives on research and teaching methods.<\/p>\n
To make change happen, it is important for school leader to consider how each faculty member can contribute in ways that provide the most benefit to the school. A visionary leader must know how to approach faculty member by knowing their strengths as well as weaknesses and trying to maximize those strengths and minimize those weaknesses. To achieve the goals, school leader also need to engage students because they are a key source of the university\u2019s vitality. Student group is the spirit of the school by having students to mobilize and participate in the changes; they can make changes happen faster. When all faculty and students are involved in these changes, they learn responsibility and feel that they are investing in the school\u2019s vision and its goals, and that can help move things forward.<\/p>\n
