But with advanced technology, soon robots will be as common as TV, personal computers and smartphones in many homes. According to an industry report, robots that are used in manufacturing are very large and heavy but today with new technology, robots are getting smaller and they can be programmed to perform many works that people could not even think of few years ago. Even manufacturing robots are also getting smaller as they are designed to work alongside people to do works that require special dexterity such as assemble laptops personal computers, smartphones etc.

Last month, company ABB has created a new type of robot called YuMi that can assemble small electronics devices that used to be assembled by human workers in lower-cost countries like China, India, Vietnam, and Malaysia. A manager explained: “These new robots are very flexible, easier to program; they are equipped with sensors and cameras to accurately do works faster, better and less error than people. Soon these robots will replace people who are working in electronics assembly lines, workers who assemble smartphone, PC, laptops, and tablets. We are planning to sell hundred thousands of them to China, Taiwan and Malaysia.”

According to the industry report, these new robots are designed to work next to assembly line workers in the first few months. With artificial intelligence, they will learn how to do these works then eventually will take over most tasks done by human. For many years, most small tasks in factories are done by human because they require dexterity skills but soon these small robots can do it faster and better than human. The industry report stated that last year sales of robots have risen to record levels and probably will exploded next year. Last year over 10,000 robots were sold but the number could reach 50,000 in the next two years. The increase is mostly due to demand in domestic robots such as vacuum cleaning robots, lawn mowing robots, and housework robots. Soon robots will pump gas for cars; selling foods in restaurants, greet customers at stores and provide information at the hotel front desks instead of receptionists. The industry predicts that investment in these robots will grow 10% a year in manufacturing export countries such as China, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia etc. because it will lower costs and increased efficiency. Robots will cut labor costs by 40% in China, 33% in South Korea, 25% in Japan, 24% in Canada and 22% in the United States. As more countries are using robots, the cost of operating robots will getting cheaper and even many smaller companies can afford to buy them to replace human workers.

It is predicted that by 2050, robots will replace many human jobs. They will replace jobs currently done by people in restaurants, housecleaning and retail sales. In a separate report, Robotic Management Consulting notes that these new robots can be reprogrammed far faster and with artificial intelligence they can be retrained to do more works. A manager declared: “Soon robots will be like PC and smartphones and most people can buy them for their housework.” The trend to use robots is not limited to developed countries but low labor costs countries like China, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia also having plans to use robots to reduce their labor costs. A Chinese manager explained: “We must use robots to keep our prices competitive. Soon most countries will not outsource manufacturing works anymore as robots are cheaper than labor cost. We must keep our economy continue to grow by export products at lowest prices to compete with others and we must use robots.” Unless something changes, it is estimated that more than 75% of people in countries that depend on lower labor cost like China, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Vietnam will be unemployed because of advanced in robots technology.

Last month, an economist raised question: “As labor costs are rising around the world, more manufacturers are taking position to replace human workers with robots. What will happen to these human workers? As more robots are used, it will change the way companies expand factories oversea as they will no longer need cheap labor. What will happen to countries with a lot of unemployed workers? What will happen to countries with large factories but employ fewer people? It will be a global economic disaster. We must reconsider the use of robots now before too late.” Immediately after that, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates told newspapers that he is worried about robots too. He said: “Humans should be worried about the threat posed by Artificial Intelligence. It could grow too strong for people to control.” During a TV interview he explained: “I am concerned about Super artificial intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. But few decades after that, when the artificial intelligence is strong enough to be a concern and I do not understand why some people are not concerned.” His view was backed up by Elon Musk, another technology billionaire and Professor Stephen Hawking, who have repeatedly warned about the possibility that Artificial Intelligence could evolve to the point that it was beyond human control. Prof Hawking said he felt that smart machines could “spell the end of the human race.”

Despite the warning and to most people’s surprise, China is the country that invests more money in robotics and artificial intelligent than any other countries. A Chinese government officer said: “By 2017, we will have more robots operating in our factories than any other country. We will automate most of our factories, from cars to electronics with advanced robotics technologies to take advantage of technology and build an advanced knowledge society.” Today China is still behind other industrialized countries in terms of robot density. It has just 30 robots per 10,000 workers employed in manufacturing industries, compared with 437 in South Korea, 323 in Japan, 282 in Germany and 152 in the United States. But it soon will change as China is now purchasing more robots from Germany, UK and the US than any others to increase its productivity. The questions are: “What will happen to its workers? What will happen when millions of workers suddenly lost their jobs? What will happen when factory owners who are getting rich due to high productivity and more profits but most of its people will be unemployed? What will happen when these robots getting smarter and out of control? At this time, no one knows.

Trong nhiều năm robots đã được dùng trong tự động hoá để giúp cải tiến chế tạo trên khắp thế giới.
